There are two things I'm trying to clarify:
1. What is betrothal
He said: "Breaking a betrothal after unlawful sex occurs is grounds to break the betrothal. That isn't the same thing as ending a marriage (divorce)."
Either he's using the modern definition of betrothal, or the 1st century judaism definition. If the former, then this statement is not useful, as breaking betrothal is valid for any reason whatsoever, a statement like "You can still break a betrothal in the Church today over adultery" is useless because you can break a betrothal over disliking the color of your fiance's socks. So this is not what Jesus was talking about.
If talking about 1st century judaism definition of betrothal, betrothal is a valid marriage, so there's no distinction to make here really. It's not a concept that plays into sacramental Christian marriage, because betrothal was a cultural thing that just had to do with the period after marriage when the husband went to prepare a home for the two of them.
So basically my point is that bringing betrothal into the explanation is not accurate in either case.
2. What is porneia
As briefly mentioned, and this wasn't really contested, what Jesus is talking about with porneia is akin to what Catholics talk about when we list the reasons that a marriage might be annulled. In other words, porneia seems to be strong proof that annulments make sense.
Overall my point is that Joe is 100% correct in saying "There isn't a single Bible passage in scripture that justifies divorce and remarriage," but "unlawful sex" isn't a good understanding of what is meant and that there's a more compelling case to be made.
Sorry for the length, brevity is not my strong suit.
@JendersII@daviste41 Betrothal today is not the same thing as 1st Century Jewish betrothal. The latter was a valid marriage that required divorce to break.
@JendersII@daviste41 I don't think your explanation is correct here. Betrothal = marriage, just the first part of the marriage. Porneia seems to be mean more like an invalid marriage—something akin to what an annulment covers. https://t.co/Y2FivJV7zl for a good treatment.
Very few videos disturb me. The last one, was a video from the Russo-Ukraine war. A combatant encounters a female soldier who is pregnant. While surrendering she desperately pleads not to be shot.
In this video, we see an infant. The infant is uttering an English language rendition of words that have been found in some variation, universal to the human species. We know that every race, every culture on earth, has words for “mama” and “papa”. In some places it’s “Mumma” and “Tata”, but they’re similar enough to be intelligible.
There is no explanation for why, other than that it is hard coded into millions of years of evolution, and as of the last 160,000 years that anatomically modern homo-sapiens have existed, is uttered by babies.
In the year 2026, I am faced with the horror of an infant, who by his nature is seeking his biological mother, an adult human female, uttering the words “mama”, to a gay couple who utilized a surrogate mother. All I can think of is “you will live to see man made horrors beyond comprehension”.
@timotheeology Where's the evidence for these claims that he engaged in sexual acts? I just read a host of quotes from his autobiography and none of them seemed to demonstrate this to be true.
American father of 3 is considering cancelling his family’s health insurance even through it “feels very irresponsible.” He just can’t afford it anymore
He pays
-$1,500 a month in premiums
- Each person in his family has a $6,000 deductible
So he would have to spend “$30,000 in co-pays that we have to pay on top of the $18,000 in monthly charges to actually get coverage.”
‘Health insurance is the biggest scam’
@Moderatemuch This line here is indicative:
"Although I don’t agree with Sammons that the traditionalist movement is a “threat” to the Catholic faith,"
This seems a willful rewording of Sammons said to make him look like a heretic.
This was the finest and most consequential political speech of my lifetime. It was what Americans needed to hear. JD Vance earned my vote. Thank you JD.
Justice for Charlie is coming.
I thought about clipping this but honestly? It's the most consequential speech of our time and you all need to watch it in full.
