TO RESPOND, ENGAGE, OR NOT

Various people will involve you in discussions, contestations, accusations, provocation, and so on. How do we choose how to react?

In most cases, it matters who is saying what and when. It is not always ‘ad hominem’ to assess the character of the speaker, as part of understanding what they’re saying and whether they should be responded to or not. Here are my own considerations:

1. There are some people I will always try hard not to respond to. Often, it is those that hardly focus on making their case but instead are preoccupied with name-calling, insulting, and grumpy trips. I don’t respond because my response wouldn���t matter anyway - for they can’t discuss. It would only serve to fetch those people undeserved public attention. This is what is sometimes called a ‘contempt card’ - A LOUD IGNORE. For these, even block, for your mental health. If their presence in your space adds nothing of value and if it subtracts more than it adds, why keep them!

2. Sometimes you have observed them over time and noticed that even when invited to a legitimate discussion, all that some can do effectively is insult. These will keep poking at you with the hope that you will descend down to their filthy trenches (sewage) where they can deal with you effectively using what they know best - curse words, character assassination, and insults. You only go there when you trust your capacity to use similar crass tools. But, often they have little or nothing to lose in terms of reputation, and you do.

3. There are those that will hold disagreeable positions, even very annoying ones, but often packaged around reason. They argue, they debate, and they try to keep civil. These I engage, when I can. Often you will learn something from them, sometimes learning about your own wrongness. In any case, where there is no critique, there can hardly be progress. The problem is where one keeps repeating a position that has clearly been out-argued; where it becomes clear that they hold onto that position for reasons other than its soundness. In such a dead end case, it makes no point engaging further.

4. Some people are so misleading and annoying, almost consistently, yet nevertheless they have to be engaged because they have many that believe in them (for various reasons). You respond for the sake of the masses. Perhaps you could save one person from being misguided.

5. In the diversity on social media, we also have to understand that we have people with mental health issues. Since mental health is not given much attention in our society, much of it goes unknown. Mentally sick people need to be respected, but we also know that they can be so damaging if not understood and helped (or avoided, if it’s all we can do). I’m no psychiatrist, but often you can tell some conspicuous signs of Bipolar disorder, narcissistic personality disorders, manias, PTSD, complexes, and various forms of delusive elements. Sometimes the inclinations that give us rare courage are born out of mental illness, just as genius tends to come along with mental disorders. The public will sing and praise us while we further drench in our mental sickness, until we are terribly broken by extremes of our disorders, and the public says: ‘I knew he/she was mad’. These need help from those who are very close to them. Mental illness rarely identifies itself, and tends to respond angrily to diagnosis. It will give all excuses to claim sanity. In terms of social media engagement, whenever I suspect mental illness, I avoid or minimise engagement. NB: No stigma intended.

6. There are those we highly respect for their various contributions and social standing who might one in a while come up with crazy positions. Not just positions we disagree with, but clearly implausible ones. For those, I will avoid engaging them in public. I may inbox or call them, or wait until we meet and talk.

7. Once in a while, get one notorious person and discipline them with a deserving bang.
