Our prayers are with the Rizal citizens affected by today's flooding. All the more, we must come together to oppose quarrying and land conversion in the Masungi landscape and the Upper Marikina Watershed. In September 2022, after two years of campaigns by civil society groups, the quarrying agreements of Rapid City, Quarry Rock and Quimson Limestone totaling some 1,300 hectares of protected areas were "ordered canceled" by the @DENROfficial. Subsequent follow ups on the status of cancellation by the Upper Marikina Watershed Coalition (UMWC) were left unanswered.

Shortly after, the organized disinformation and moves to cancel the Masungi Geopark Project escalated through the help of several local congressmen. We fear that these interests continue to harbor hope that they can destroy our watershed. But people are beginning to see the severe impacts of wrong land use, and they won't take this sitting down.

Fact Check and Reaction to DENR latest statement: The Masungi Georeserve is a non-profit conservation initiative run by the MGFI which is a non-stock, non-profit Foundation duly registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Masungi is therefore not a resort, which is built for the primary purpose of entertainment and profit.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) itself has said that MGFI has no outstanding tax obligations. Only light, local, sustainable, and temporary structures and features that enhance and sustain the character of the landscape are present.

Masungi is also known for implementing some of the strictest and most sustainable visitor protocols and carrying capacities in the country.

Contrary to the statement of the DENR, the trails have a Certificate of Non-Coverage (CNC) which is the equivalent of the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) for projects with insignificant environmental impact as defined by the Philippines Environment Impact System.

With Pasig City residents being some of the beneficiaries of a healthy watershed, Mayor @VicoSotto urges the DENR to dialogue and collaborate with the Masungi Georeserve Foundation. Mayor Vico and his team visited the project site in 2022 to see the state of the watershed and the work being done to address deforestation. According to studies by the @WorldBank and flood modeling by the @MObservatory, a reforested Upper Marikina Watershed will help decrease the flood extent and flood volume in Pasig and Marikina City, should another Typhoon Ondoy happen. The group also planted native Katmon trees as a reminder of their visit and a symbol of their commitment to conservation in the uplands.
