🐘 Elephant: 22-month pregnancy. Mouse: 3 weeks. Why?
Research from @VanderbiltU ESI analyzed 845 mammal species and found gestation length is not just a body size story — it shapes and is shaped by nearly every other life history trait.

Few can match Frans de Waal’s intellectual sweep—anthropology, behaviour, biology, cognition, philosophy, ethics, politics, social relationships—and unstinting science communication efforts to bring humility and humanity into our human-centred world.

I had the opportunity to meet Wally Van Sickle, the founder of Idea Wild Foundation, along with one of his incredible team members, Anette Penny, at their office in Fort Collins.
It was an absolute pleasure learning about the inception of the organisation, along with the fascinating backstory behind their distinctive name and logo.
The @IDEAWILD crew is truly a remarkable bunch, dedicated to the noble cause of "Conserving Species by Empowering the Heroes & Sheroes of the Planet." It's inspiring to see their commitment to making a positive impact on biodiversity.
One of the cool things I discovered early in my conservation career is that they actively fundraise for field equipment for ecologists and support researchers across the globe.
If you're interested in learning more or supporting their cause, be sure to check out their website for additional information: https://t.co/nGYxBTixK6
It was a downright awesome time checking out Colorado fishes. I had tagged along with Kim Nichter and Samuel Radosevich for electrofishing in the Running Deer Natural Area along Cache la Poudre River.
A generous invitation from Sam led to a lasting friendship formed during my time at @ColoradoStateU. We were on the hunt for depletion estimates during the fishing gig, and the fish we reeled in were quite a catch!

Embarking on my internship at @ColoradoStateU provided an incredible opportunity to acquire knowledge alongside Dr. George Wittemyer and his team, made possible by the support of the #InlaksRavisankaran fellowship. I extend my sincere gratitude to @venadavenu and a specific group of individuals for their encouragement of my application, unwavering support throughout my journey, and steadfast belief in my potential.
Throughout the internship, I deepened my understanding of global conservation challenges, particularly those concerning large mammals. It was indeed insightful to learn about the amazing work Dr. Wittemyer's students were doing in Africa on African elephants and herbivores in America, utilizing advanced scientific and novel methods.
I honed my skills in applying Bayesian statistics for ecological modeling and delved into the diverse flora and fauna of Colorado, learning from those dedicated to its study. Beyond acquiring knowledge, I also forged a fantastic network of friends and acquaintances.
Embracing the new routine of biking to school instigated a necessary change, serving as a constant motivator for maintaining fitness.
Friday afternoons were devoted to post-seminar club activities, adding an extra layer of insight to the week. Weekends followed a routine of common yet exhilarating hikes with the friends I've made along the way.
Wrapping up the internship was nothing short of spectacular, culminating in a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park with Dr. Wittemyer.
I'm grateful for the enriching learning experience and the opportunity to marvel at the breathtaking beauty of Colorado!
Had the pleasure of meeting Stefano Daza Arango from @itiscolossal today. Fascinating insights into their ambitious woolly mammoth project, aiming to make extinction a thing of the past. #IEF2023@ElephantsIEF

Very excited to announce my new R package spAbundance for fitting single-species and multi-species spatially-explicit N-mixture models, distance sampling models, and GLMMs. Includes options for random intercepts/slopes and species correlations. #rstats https://t.co/8GQyTbznqh.
