Tragic News 💔
DNA test results have confirmed that the unidentified body deposited at an Ikorodu mortuäry was that of Pelumi Onifade.
- In 2020, Nigerian youths took to the streets during the #EndSARS protests. One of the reporters covering the event was Onifade Emmanuel Pelumi.
- On October 24, 2020, Pelumi was arrested and taken away by police officers in Agege despite explaining that he was a reporter. He was also wearing a jacket identifying him as a member of the press.
- A few days later, an unidentified body was discovered at a môrtuary in Ikorodu, Lagos, and it was speculated that the body belonged to Pelumi Onifade.
- In July 2024, the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the Lagos State Government to conduct a coroner’s inquest to determine the cause of Pelumi’s death and identify those responsible.
- The court also ordered the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to perform a post-mortem examination on the unidentified body received from Ikorodu.
- LASUTH stated that Pelumi’s body could not initially be identified because DNA samples held at the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre were dëstroyed during the October 2020 #EndSARS unrest.
- After prolonged back-and-forth between the hospital and the court, a DNA test was eventually conducted using a sample provided by Pelumi’s mother.
- The magistrate revealed that the report confirmed a DNA match between the previously unidentified body and the sample provided by Pelumi’s mother.
- This development brings a painful confirmation for Pelumi’s family and loved ones, who have endured years of uncertainty while seeking answers and closure.
- Their counsel is now calling for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of Pelumi’s de@th.
- The case has been adjourned until July 7, 2026.
May the soul of the departed rest in peace. 💔
Eleven years later, the same thing is still happening.
And honestly, this time is even worse.
The economy is harder. Inflation has skyrocketed. Food is expensive. Transport is expensive. Rent is expensive. Everything is expensive. The House Officer of 2026 is facing a much tougher reality than the House Officer of 2015.
So yes, I am actually happy that today’s House Officers have the guts to speak up. I’m happy they have the courage to go on strike, express their pain, and demand the wages they have already worked for.
Back then, many of us were too scared. Today’s House Officers are refusing to suffer in silence, and I respect that.
I urge our medical elders, senior colleagues, associations, consultants, and the entire medical community to support them. This is not the time to shame them or call them entitled. This is the time to stand with them.
Because if we experienced this in 2015 and it is still happening in 2026, then the problem is not the House Officers. The problem is the system.
House Officers should not have to beg for salaries they have already earned.
We cannot keep building our healthcare system on the backs of unpaid young doctors. Enough is enough.
#PayHouseOfficers #FixTheSystem
You did your house job in FMC in 2015, let's assume your pay was 150k then, and rate was around 150-182 naira to a dollar, meaning you were earning $820-$1000 per month, and nobody held your salary for months or even delayed it.
But because you are freshly baked neurosurgeon and have even left the country your younger colleagues who are being paid $223 per month and are still being owned for 7 months or receiving late payment should quit medicine rather than being lazy on their jobs with empty stomach because they want to be doctors who prioritise their own welfare first.
If things were so sweet for you why did you leave the country?
I think there is this pill they give to residents to always look down on their younger colleagues and medical officers cos you are already saying that the medical officers who taught you during House job are lacking in knowledge because they refused to pursue residency.
Lol and just lol.
House officers deserve to be paid. Full stop.
But beyond emergency payments and temporary fixes, what we need is a lasting solution to the recurring salary crisis affecting young doctors across Nigeria.
No healthcare system can thrive when the professionals at its foundation are forced to beg for salaries they have already worked for.
The conversation should not just be about paying arrears today. it should be about fixing the system so that house officers are never owed again.

No matter how this house officers saga wants to play out, I’m on the side of the HOs
Too many times, HOs have been cheated of many things because it’s a transient year
More than 50k was stolen monthly from my HJ salary and till today nobody gave a damn
Aluta continua fellas.
@ThecruiseDoc The annoying thing is that it's the same thing we complain about whenever patients blame doctors for issues that can only be solved by the system.
