That is the gospel

The gospel is not a scorecard. It is not God waiting to see if you finally become good enough, consistent enough, or religious enough.

For by grace are ye saved - not by your merit.
Through faith - not by your performance.
And that not of yourselves - not from you.
It is the gift of God - not something you earn.
Not of works - not by what you do.

Lest any man should boast.

That is why the gospel is good news.
If salvation depended on your record, your effort, your church attendance, your morality, or how sorry you feel, you would never know if you had done enough. You would either live in fear or in pride.

God does not save people who prove themselves. He saves people who stop trying to prove themselves and receive what He already finished. The cross is not a starting line for your performance. It is the place where the work was done.

You cannot add to a gift.
You can only receive it.

That is the gospel.

Should we do good works?

Yes. But not so that you can become saved, and not so that you can stay saved.

If someone claims to have received the gift and then lives as if nothing changed, Scripture does not treat that as healthy faith. James says faith that never acts is dead. Jesus said a good tree bears fruit. Paul said we were created in Christ for good works.

The difference is motive.

Before Christ, good works are often an attempt to earn standing, quiet guilt, look righteous, or bargain with God.

After Christ, good works flow from a new heart: gratitude, love, obedience, and the Spirit’s work in you. You do them because you belong to Him, not because you are trying to qualify for Him.

So yes - do good works after you are saved. Feed the hungry. Tell the truth. Forgive. Serve. Pursue holiness. Love your neighbor. But do them as a saved person, not as a person still trying to get in.

The gospel says “not of works” is the same gospel that then says, “for good works.”

Grace does not produce laziness. It produces a new kind of life.

We are not saved by works.
We are saved for works.
Works are the fruit, not the root.

They are the evidence of a living faith, not the payment that purchases it.

That is the gospel.
