In the greater scheme of things, I don't think it's so terrible to have billionaires who want to help poor people in Africa or who are thoughtful about the future. This is probably a step up from oil barons and Walmart founders.
I do think there is groupthink around specific views they hold, like the insistence that AI might be conscious. At least I haven't seen the evidence that would justify such a strong belief, and yet every pro EA account seems to be banging that drum.
@usuario13475@esjesjesj I agree some people use the term fascist too much. But my basic point is, you can be right-wing and also be collectivist. Arguably that describes most human societies throughout history.
@Memetic_Hazard_@esjesjesj Right-wingers are much more likely to defend Russia. Far right is like the new version of international Marxism for Putin, an ideology he can use to pick off people from the other side.
@esjesjesj Notice how it's always people who have similar views to Hitler (like Musk and other far right, white identity people) who try to make these arguments. There's some weird psychological shit going on here where they want to hold these views while also denying them.
@LeftwaffenWatch@esjesjesj So why do modern day neo-Nazis and fascists all support the right then? It's funny how deep in denial you are, you can't admit that your own beliefs are similar to Hitler.
I could also list out a bunch of things Trump did that qualify as "left-wing"...he implemented tariffs, he bought government equity in companies, he let people out of prison...turns out Trump is a left-winger or at least a centrist. ๐
But of course everyone know the overall tendency of Trump's government and political career is very right-wing. It's about nationalism, racial identitarianism, anti-immigrant, warmongering, coercing other countries. And same with Hitler. The fact that fascism and far-right politicians borrowed some ideas from the left doesn't mean they weren't far right.
@usuario13475@esjesjesj Like a lot of people you seem to be confusing classical liberalism with being right-wing. Being right-wing is not defined by being an individualist or only supporting free market economics, it's about supporting conservative and traditionalist/reactionary ideas.
The entire idea of left and right in politics was originally referring to how during the French Revolution, anti-monarchist groups sat on the left side of the French parliament, while the pro-monarchy, pro-religion bloc sat on the right side.
So from the beginning, left-wing meant progress and egalitarianism, while right-wing stood for hierarchy and tradition. Just because some future Marxist societies didn't live up to left-wing ideals very well doesn't change that this was the original meaning.
Hitler is obviously very far on the "supporting hierarchy and tradition" side. He wanted to restore former greatness of Germany and impose a racial hierarchy to German society. Not only was he right-wing, he was a very extreme example of right-wing. It's silly to try to argue otherwise.
But he didn't espouse that worldview. Left-wing is about egalitarianism, being open to immigration and cooperating with other countries, being tolerant of minorities. Whether you support these ideas or not, obviously Hitler didn't support them. It's ridiculous to try to say he was left-wing.
I think the American media has been negligent in not more aggressively investigating the Trump family's extensive financial links to foreign governments, including the governments that are involved in this war. It's easy to predict that World Liberty Financial will be a huge scandal in the near future.

.@VanityFair posted an excerpt from a book containing outrageous and categorically false allegations.
The allegations made by this author are completely insane and never happened. We denied every one of these claims on the record, yet the author failed to provide a single shred of evidence to substantiate any of them. No bank statements, wire transfer records, account numbers, transaction dates, or other verifiable details were provided to support these extraordinary accusations.
During the period in question, I was one of the most scrutinized people in the world, subjected to intense media coverage, multiple congressional investigations, and a special counsel investigation. I voluntarily cooperated with these investigations, providing over 30 hours of testimony. None of these allegations ever surfaced, because none of these events ever happened.
These are outrageous fabrications being presented as investigative journalism. This is not journalism. It is a mixture of fantasy, fiction, and advocacy, written by someone who is either deeply disturbed or acting with sinister intent.
In terms of the conditional possibilities, seems to me that if we start with too crude of a model the likelihood we come up with could be worthless. For instance in looking at the number of civets raised in China, we probably don't care about civets raised in northern provinces like Shandong (which is a major civet breeding hub). Those animals would be unlikely to be infected with a SARS virus native to southern China and SE Asia.
Instead what we're presumably looking for (and admittedly this is all speculative but it seems like the most likely scenario for zoonotic origin) is a case where animals were farmed in the south and then sold at markets in a city. The Huanan Market in Wuhan was one example of this. We don't know how many other wet markets were.
@mbw61567742 In the appendix you write: "No animal at HSM tested positive for SC2 out of 457 sampled. (W.J. Liu et al. 2024) That is clearly unexpected if the prior host was in the market."
Was testing of the live animals sold at the Huanan Market released?
