Indian police have arrested 20 Muslims and registered cases against 30 others following clashes in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, after part of the nearly 600-year-old Shahi Mosque was removed as part of a road-widening project ahead of the 2028 Simhastha festival.

The unrest erupted on Monday as Muslim protesters opposed the removal, prompting police to deploy tear gas after reports of stone pelting.

The mosque committee had earlier begun removing around three feet of the structure itself.

Police have since intensified action against people accused of circulating inflammatory or misleading content related to the dispute.
