US Open Source AI is in a bad place right now.

Here are potential solutions:

- Federal grants or a federal compute quota set aside for open source AI companies, since open source is a public good.
- Treat open source as national infrastructure with tax credits, accelerated depreciation, and sovereign procurement guarantees for US open source models in defense, healthcare, finance, and energy.
- Lean into the hardware-funded model. NVIDIA is doing it with Nemotron, but AMD and Intel should be funding open source too so they can optimize models for their own chips.
- Stop trying to compete with frontier closed source models. Build smaller, vertical open source models for specific industries like legal, biotech, code, and defense.
- Define open source AI standards so startups aren't each reinventing the foundation, which would cut their time and cost to market.
