“Easy” is a word people often use to describe other people’s jobs.

So I have a simple rule.

If you haven’t done the job, you can’t call it easy.

And even then, be careful flinging “easy” around. There’s a good chance you don’t have all the context, you haven’t absorbed all the assumptions, and you don’t really know what’s involved to pull the thing off.

It’s the same reason I don’t believe there’s such a thing as low hanging fruit. Or if there is, it’s often far less than you think. Because, once again, it’s usually used to describe something other people are supposed to harvest.

When the topic of the resurrection comes up, people are full of questions:
-Will our pets be there?
-Will we recognize family?
-Will we be able to fly?
-Will we remember our earthly lives?
-Will we still be married?

These are all great questions. In this list, only the last is explicitly answered in the Bible. Jesus gives us the answer in a back-and-forth argument with the Sadducees in Mark 12, one of the chapters we read today in Bible in One Year.

The Sadducees were a group in first-century Judaism who denied the resurrection. Trying to stump Jesus, they propose a ludicrous example of a woman who was married to seven successive brothers, all of whom died without fathering a child with her. (If you’re wondering why this fictional woman married a whole string of brothers, that’s a topic for another day, but it’s part of the laws of the Torah called Levirate [=brother-in-law] marriage; see Deuteronomy 25:5-10.)

In what they suppose will be the clinching argument, the Sadducees ask Jesus, “In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife” (Mark 12:23).

In his reply, Jesus first masterfully insults them, basically saying, “Do you guys never read the Bible?” He follows this by saying, “For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven” (12:25).

As angels don’t marry, neither do resurrected people marry.
Marriage is for this world and this world only.

In the new heavens and new earth, free of sin and suffering, even the most loving of marriages in this world will seem like a casual friendship compared with the deep and flawless love we have for everyone in the world of the resurrection.
