Very sad to learn of the passing of Marcel Ophuls, today, at ninety-seven; his achievement in the art of documentary is historic, both as moral reckoning and political activism—he created nonfiction forms for memory in a time and place of planned forgetting and enforced silence.
Today we remember literature laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, who passed away yesterday at the age of 89 in his native Peru.
Vargas Llosa was a significant figure in Latin American literature and culture. His extensive body of work includes over 30 novels, as well as plays, essays, literary critiques, and journalism. His writing reflects his deep love of storytelling, characterised by rich language and spanning a variety of genres—from autobiographical books and historical novels to erotic fiction and thrillers.
In the 1960s, Latin American literature experienced rapid developmental period that has come to be called El Boom, and Vargas Llosa was at the heart of this explosion.
He was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature “for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat.”

it’s absolutely insane to me that Syria is minding its own business trying to build itself back up, and Israel just decides to go out and bomb Damascus without consequence or really much coverage
More than 70 Palestinians have been killed in the last 31 days in the West Bank, mostly in the north (Jenin, Tulkarem, Tubas) as Israel wages Operation Iron Wall.
Just this morning a 73 year old, Walid Lahlouh, was sniped in Jenin refugee camp as he tried to reach his home to grab some belongings.
The entire West Bank is on lockdown meaning no movement is allowed between districts due to military closures.
Israeli forces have been bombing residential homes and buildings in Jenin refugee camp for over a week, dozens of houses have been bombed, while tens other were burned.
The army is also escalating towards the south and center of the West Bank, meaning the entire West Bank is under attack at this moment.
60% of all vegetables in the U.S. come from Mexico. 50% of all fruit/nuts. If you live in the U.S Northeast or upper midwest, most of your electricity is powered by Energy from Canada. Economists expect the 25% tariffs will cost the average U.S. family an extra $250/month.
Trump has no clue what he just did. Some car parts go back & forth between 🇲🇽🇨🇦🇺🇸 FIVE times. The fallout will be epic. And different from Trump, Trudeau did the math on how to respond. It will create food insecurity, bring 🚘 production to a halt, worsen housing crisis /1
Many of the released Palestinian detainees, including children, are suffering from different illnesses, including skin diseases.
In today’s release, some detainees are being hospitalized due to Israeli torture and abuse while in Israeli torture camps.
At the same time the Israeli army was deployed to raid the homes of families of released detainees and threatened them from celebrating at gunpoint.
Some detainees were tied up for months, leading to amputations. The testimonies are horrifying. Israeli Prison guards really showed no mercy.
Reminding that many were being held without trial or charge, while hundreds from Gaza were literally put in dungeons.
1) The Trump administration just gave a random Silicon Valley CEO -- who possess no public office or accountability -- access to the Treasury Department's payments system (and with, your Social Security number)
This is one of the images deleted from the @CDCgov historical archive, by the way. I downloaded it this morning and can't access it anymore. We are ready to repeat the past.
