i used to have sm shit goin on now it’s just work. sleep. get unreasonably drunk and listen to electric wizard with an entire pack of newports, questioning my existence and place in society as a functioning human being. eat burger. damn
actually insane that a base model steam deck costs less than a switch 2 and plays better games on TOP of being modable enough to run switch games
what a time to be alive
dude you like…actually worked on doom. you were a part of the team. that’s a major accomplishment in itself given the series’ success. why lie about stuff like this, constantly? especially when romero, who worked on the same god damn game, is gonna inevitably shut you down?
In 1993 I joined id Software. There was a Doom Bible written by Tom Hall, but I only ever got a brief skim of it. I think it was used by the artists and John Romero to some extent, but I didn't really access it. One of my jobs was actually to write the Doom manual.
As part of that I had to name all the enemies. I didn't stretch my brain too far. I mean "Zombie" wasn't a tough call. I changed the "Bruiser Brothers" to "Hell Barons" so there's that.
But I also had to create the Doom guy's backstory. I wrote about five entire pages of story, I discussed his previous career, why he was now embittered, what the corporate experiments on Phobos were about, and so forth. Then I started cutting back on the story. I thought it was too much, and who cared anyway?
In the end, the final backstory I have is just 2 sentences. You show up on Phobos and there's monsters. But really, what else do you need? I view this as my greatest contribution to digital gaming. If you want to read text, get a book.
Anyway if you love backstory, I'm the bad guy here. If you hate backstory, I'm your huckleberry.
