Thank you, Inside Higher Ed, for highlighting our work at Alabama A&M University. I was honored to participate in this interview.

Here’s a bit of a recap of the month:
On July 28th, I learned of my transition to a new co-ed residential community housing 600+ students. For those who don’t know, the past two years at Morgan State University, I managed a first-year male community with 200 students.

doctoral program. I am shocked, amazed, and uneasy about the semester. With all of these emotions, it is essential to have a team that can help through this space. With that said, I’d like to introduce you to my team.

of the legacy halls. As the institution, like many HBCUs, is having a great spike in enrollment, it is necessary to train our student staff members for all that they may face when navigating residence life.
On August 21st, I began my last semester of coursework for my

This summer has been dedicated to those willing to dream.
Those who dared to dream when COVID-19 said college was not an option; those who chose to dream when affirmative action was deemed unnecessary; those who dreamed for the future success of those to follow.

I’m actually interested to see which HBCUs will begin this work asap. Now that the decision has been made, the time is yesterday. We cannot wait until early decision season to start having these conversations.
This.
With funding that comes from enrollment, I hope to see strengthening of departments through personnel, restructuring, and overall management.
Yes, it’s great to have students enroll but if we’re not working to ensure their success (graduation at minimum) it means nothing
I know enrollment is super important for HBCUs. But we also have to think about retention & graduation, too. If this new AA ruling does lead to growth, I hope it’s sustainable and student-oriented. Not just dollars-oriented.
I’ve been doing a great level of advocacy around professional development opportunities within my department. I feel like I shouldn’t have to advocate as much, because it would be something I require/expect. If things don’t work out, I’ll just find those opportunities on my own.
Seeing institutions make statements like, “We will remain committed to diversity…” is not the bandage we think it is. Affirmative Action was an attempt to address the systemic racism that has plagued our society. No one ever said it was the cure.
Affirmative action was never a complete answer in the drive towards a more just society. But for generations of students who had been systematically excluded from most of America’s key institutions—it gave us the chance to show we more than deserved a seat at the table.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision, it’s time to redouble our efforts.
I would love to talk to someone from the Biden-Harris administration @usedgov about why encouraging colleges and universities to “give serious consideration to the adversities students have overcome” places an unfair burden on Black students to perform racial trauma in essays.
Closed out the academic year in celebration with my students. Grateful for the journey. Next up Year 3 🤞🏽
