@uncletimmensgym Have you received any help with this yet? My husband is a professional translator, primarily working from Japanese to English, and may be able to help... Feel free to DM me 📩
The discussion about pronouncing non-English names in the latest @GymCastic “Behind the Scenes” prompted me to share a quick pronunciation tip for Icelandic: the stress is *always* on the first syllable.
So “Eythora” is actually pronounced “EY-thor-a” (as opposed to *ey-THOR-a)
Also, Icelandic phonology is practically impossible for non-native speakers, so I wouldn’t insist on 💯% “correct” pronunciation, but at least stress is one thing you can always be sure of! It takes some getting used to though, especially with names like “MA-ri-a” or “SO-fi-a” 😵💫
That said, maybe her own pronunciation is impacted by the fact that she’s Dutch (I myself often “mispronounce” my name when introducing myself to a native English speaker), but she does indeed speak Icelandic, so I can only presume she would pronounce her own name “EY-thor-a”
@Pamchenkova Is it possible the problem is not with the dance/athletic performance (which is indeed incredible), but the choppy nature of the music? A medley with at least a half a dozen different songs doesn’t exactly flow or have a clear thorough line…
@thorpeheath And it looks so easy! I was certain it was only’ 2.5… I had to watch it in slow motion (on his Instagram: https://t.co/YK5t350mou) to count the twists 🌪️
@thorpeheath I have a theory that everyone’s favorite era is whatever was happening when they first discovered the sport. For me, it’s the early/mid 90s. That said, I only recently discovered the ‘72 Olympic finals and it’s blowing my mind. Old school artistry + new school athleticism 🤯
Hearing @GymCastic talk about how the coaches’ ridiculously oversized gear made them look like little boys in their dad’s clothes reminded me that the male gymnasts got the same treatment. These pants were a size small. (Photo from Toyota Cup, 2009)
@JudgeThree@GymCastic I have the same question. Not to take anything away from the women—they deserve a nicer facility than Peik—but if they have $15.5m in the budget for a new gym I have to imagine they could have easily kept the men’s team, perhaps making a new facility for men and women to share…
@uncletimmensgym I put my husband—a professional Japanese translator—on the case. He is fairly sure that this is a typo.
He did find a Japanese gymnast with a very similar name, born in Tokyo in 1948 by the name of “Itsuko OSHIO” (押尾衣津子).
Could this possibly be the person in question?
@jack_murley@thorpeheath@BBCSport@GymAustralia@gymnastics Thank you for sharing this. In my experience the gymnastics community—particularly coaches, judges, and other higher ups—could be surprisingly homophobic. We need more out representation like this in the gymnastics world!
The Man vs Beast video that @OtotheBeirne was talking about on @GymCastic. It was actually a Stanford gymnast (Marshall Erwin) who, spoiler alert, won by a technicality. Best part was when Bam Bam dropped trou and peed all over the stage 😂
