« I didn’t get where I am - born on a military base in Ghana, where I spent my childhood, to the position of European editorial director of Vogue and editor-in-chief of British Vogue - by being unduly fascinated with myself. » extract of A Visible Man by Edward Enninful.
When we speak about tolerance and inclusion, I feel like the focus is rather on who is ‘tolerating’ and who is ‘including’ rather than those being actively pushed at the forefront for once.
I’m starting to have an issue with the term inclusivity. It’s an abstract notion to me, just like tolerance. You don’t get to tolerate me, you don’t get to decide If I’m included. I will be visible, seen and respected.
Don’t get me wrong, I think support and help on the ground is absolutely needed and should always be highlighted. I still find the lack of Arab inclusion (explicitly & clearly) in that precise initiative quite alarming. That remains my personal views and opinions of course.
