According to CBC Globe, cultural philosopher Prof. Lee Ji-young calls BTS’s Grammys move a “postcolonial act”, BTS didn’t just reject an award; they questioned the entire Western gatekeeping system: “Who gave you the authority to evaluate us?” The “Asian fence” just got hit hard.

Forbes calls BTS’s audience “an independent constituency”, one the Grammys can’t control. The Academy can withhold a trophy, but it “cannot withdraw the attention, amplification, revenue and cultural standing” millions give BTS. That’s power no trophy can measure.

I think one of the biggest things that makes a large part of this fandom uncomfortable is change. But we need to accept something: it is not 2017 anymore. It is not 2020 anymore. And ARMY culture is not going to stay exactly the same forever.

BTS have changed. The music industry has changed. Social media has changed. The way people discover music has changed. And, most importantly, the scale of BTS's audience has changed. You cannot expect a fandom culture that developed around a much smaller, more insulated community to remain exactly the same when BTS are now more mainstream and publicly visible than ever before.

In my opinion, that is going to be uncomfortable for some veteran ARMYs, especially because the fandom is no longer made up only of people who are deeply embedded in BTS spaces.

There are casual listeners, general-public listeners, newer fans, people discovering BTS through one song, people watching the tour because it is a major cultural event. Not everyone who enjoys BTS has to become an ARMY in the traditional sense. So, please lets just ENJOYYY and have FUNN stanning BTS and spreading their ART.

The problem was not that Asian music received an additional trophy. It was that the new trophy would become the place where Grammy voters directed Asian artists instead of recognizing them throughout the broader pop field and the ceremony’s most prestigious categories.

A category promoted as representation could function as a containment mechanism — recognition without full equality.
That interpretation drew strength from BTS’ history with the Grammys. The group became one of the most commercially powerful and culturally influential acts in the world, topped the Billboard charts, sold out major stadiums and repeatedly delivered marquee Grammy performances.

The Recording Academy benefited from the attention of BTS and its global fan base. Yet the group’s five nominations produced no wins, and BTS never received a nomination in the general-field categories that define the ceremony’s institutional hierarchy.

Fans saw a recurring message: BTS was global enough to demonstrate the international relevance, but not sufficiently accepted to be treated as an unqualified part of the pop establishment.

The new Asian pop category therefore appeared less like the removal of a barrier than the construction of a more decorative one. Critics connected the dispute to the recording industry’s long history of sorting artists of color into racialized categories.
