People are drawn to conspiracy theories because they offer comfort in chaos. Our brains crave patterns and explanations, especially during frightening events. Conspiracies make us feel like we understand what others don’t, giving a false sense of control and even superiority. Combine that with mistrust of authority and the subconscious desire to belong to a cool group that “knows the truth,” and it’s easy to see why such theories catch on.
