🎗️ Awareness Matters
I am part of the fight.
Our Founder, H.E. Hajiya Turai Umar Yar’Adua, embodies the spirit of compassion and commitment that drives ICCA’s mission promoting early detection, cancer awareness, and access to care for all.
At International Cancer Centre Abuja (ICCA), we believe that a healthier Nigeria is part of the Nigeria we are all working towards. Through cancer awareness, early detection, health education and care, we remain committed to healthier communities and a brighter future.
Blood donation can save lives, but there are still many things people believe about donating blood that simply aren’t true.
Swipe through as we clear up some common myths and misconceptions about blood donation in Nigeria.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH | SEPTEMBER
This month, we’re celebrating Maryamu Emmanuel Filibus from our Clinical Department for her selfless service, commitment, and positive impact at the International Cancer Centre Abuja.
Maryamu, thank you for being part of the work we do to bring hope, care, and better lives to our patients and communities. Your contribution matters, and we’re grateful to have you on the team.
Many people believe a "safe" amount of alcohol exists. Science says otherwise.
There is no threshold of alcohol consumption below which cancer risk disappears; not a glass of wine, not "just one" drink.

Nigeria recorded an estimated 152,261 new cancer cases and 90,795 cancer deaths in 2024. Blood cancers combined accounted for about 7,193 new cases (4.7% of the national total) and 4,161 deaths (4.6% of national cancer deaths).
Don’t keep treating the same symptoms without asking why they keep coming back. Speak to a qualified healthcare professional, get evaluated, and know what your blood results are telling you. Early detection can make a difference.
Where diagnosed early and treated fully, some blood cancers, especially Hodgkin lymphoma and childhood leukaemia are among the most curable cancers that exist.
It is important to note that Blood Cancers make up roughly 1 in 20 of all new cancer cases and deaths in Nigeria. It is more common than most people assume.
Meanwhile, leukaemia already ranks among Nigeria's 15 most-diagnosed cancers, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma sits within the top 10 both are more common than most Nigerians assume, largely because they are so often mistaken for malaria, typhoid, or ordinary anaemia.
Blood cancer happens when white blood cells (or, less often, other blood cells) begin growing abnormally and crowd out the healthy blood cells the body needs to carry oxygen, fight infection, and stop bleeding.

Knowing which of the three blood cancer groups (and which subtype) a patient has is what allows a clinician to choose the right chemotherapy regimen, decide whether a bone marrow transplant is needed, and give the patient and family an honest, useful prognosis.
Treatment is type-specific and, for the acute leukaemia’s, time-sensitive. A patient started promptly on the correct protocol for, say, acute promyelocytic leukaemia can go from a life threatening bleeding emergency to remission, but the wrong initial treatment worsens the odds.
