I have a theory - not very groundbreaking - that the main reason why some TV-series don't work (this applies especially to adaptations) is because the creators didn't crack the show's overall tone, the comedy/drama interplay. this article is important:

“We might incline toward literary HEAs because readers can’t control the events in their real lives. Chaos will always be just outside our door and all around us, but the HEA provides a sanctuary. In this fictionalized realm, we are protected.”
“don’t know why” is one of those songs that feels like either a forgotten memory or a dream and you’re not sure which. simply stunning. #CAWM20

“This to me is one of the joys of both reading and writing historical fiction: you can interrupt history and insert a tale that yields a fuller, and therefore more just, version of the past.” https://t.co/aVdfkelEiv
6/6 Despite my earnest efforts at being a sceptic (believe me, I tried) I have to say, I'm converted. I've seen a lot of dumb viking stuff in my day - this film is good.
1/6 Ok – I was fully prepared to hate #TheNorthman . I feared this adaptation of the Amleth/Hamlet story would be the same generic projection of modern cultural fantasies of the North we've all seen before: 2 hours in an icy no-man’s land where drunk, pillaging vikings abound.
5/6 Separate from other retellings of the North, #TheNorthman is a love letter to the mythic Scandinavian tales that inspire it, dramatizing the harsh realities of medieval life, and a folk hero in search of the truth about his past as well as his future.
