@shayvswift You say I abandoned the ship
but I was going down with it,
my white knuckled dying grip
holding tight to your quiet resentment.
& my friends say it isn't right to be scared
everyday of a love affair,
Every breath feels like rarest air
when you're not sure if he wants to be there
@TheItalienDude@maira4yo - countries who name face a fuel deficit and the impact that will have on the population of those nations. Yes, birth rates falling with lower population figures. But history has shown us that less people + more equal access to resources will lead to population explosion.
@TheItalienDude@maira4yo Yes, but ironically China instituted the 1 child policy because of overpopulation. As of now, this planet holds a global population of 8 billion people. Some might argue that's too many people for resources to be shared. Look at the impact the Iran war has had on western -
@TheItalienDude@maira4yo Yes, and you interpreted ‘one generation’ as ‘100% participation,’ which is exactly the math problem here. A generation of men went to war during WW2. Did every man die on the front lines then?
@pyle_gordon@maira4yo - there will be less competition for resources, house prices will likely therefore come down, job opportunities will prosper and the economic situation will eventually improve, and the population will grow once more. It's all swings & roundabouts.
@pyle_gordon@maira4yo I think lack of birth control probably played a large factor in the 1300's. And like I mentioned, it's cyclical. Wars, plague, economic collapses have all contributed to birth rate dips in history. This is no different. Next gen's population will be smaller, therefore -
@LaughingManNSFW@h_b_son@maira4yo - which has led to a lot of anti immigrant feeling in our country. We're also a nation which is heavily reliant on state welfare, which means our govt will often place migrants in free social housing, putting further strain on lack of housing for youngsters.
@LaughingManNSFW@h_b_son@maira4yo It's definitely an issue I'm seeing in the US, Canada & Australia specifically. Forgive me, I'm somewhat ignorant of Canadian politics! In the UK, as a small island for us it's more a lack of housing and too many people - especially with increased illegal migration -
@h_b_son@maira4yo - and house prices have skyrocketed. To put it into perspective, where I live, I would need a deposit of £100k to afford the mortgage on a 1 bed flat. Young couples can barely afford to buy a home. It's no surprise the birth rate has plummeted.
@h_b_son@maira4yo I can only speak from my own lived experience, but in the UK, there is a huge housing crisis. Many in their 20s & 30's, myself included are still living at home with their parents as we can't afford to get on the property ladder. Wages in the UK stagnated since the '08 crash -
@loonlake55 afford a £270k mortgage on a 1 bed flat in the South East on my single income & the youth of today lack the disposable income to go out clubbing and drinking, which is why nightclubs are shutting down & the pubs are struggling. But sure, our parents had it the worst. 🙄
@loonlake55 This doesn't sound anything like how my boomer gen parents described their teenage/YA years? At 19 my folks had bought their 1st home on 1 wage & every weekend were going out drinking, clubbing & going to rollerskating nights. I'm 33, still living with said parents as I can't -
@EnolaJon As dire as the outlook seems right now, I can't see a future where the state pension will be removed. The party in power to make that call knows they would never be elected again. It's more likely they will just keep increasing the state pension age & force us to work for longer.
@TheCryptoSquire I'd buy my 60 year old mum an 'enjoy your retirement' card and write it in it that she can finally tell her horrible boss she's quitting as she no longer needs to work anymore just so I can see the look of joy on her face.
