I chose the second option. Most of my income comes from being employed working a normal job, then on days off I do art as a hobby/supplementary source of income. This way Iโm not in a crisis if art suddenly stops being profitable. Whatever you chose, I wish you luck!
"Have you ever thought about trying to become an artist full time? I'm asking simply because I'm hoping to become a full time artist myself..."

I have. The answer depends on your individual situation, but in short, I sadly can't recommend it. 1/7
And if your art career fails, you will have a big hole in your resume which will make it very hard to find employment afterwards. My recommendation is to either choose a safer genre of art than lolisho, or only do art as a side gig in addition to your main source of income.
Tip #2: Don't try too hard to make your OC look unique. The best designs are concise. If you give your OC a dozen little details + heterochromia + mouse years + a dog tail + wings + two-tone hair + a scar, they won't look cool or unique. They'll just look messy and unfocused.

Tip #1: avoid complex patterns or graphics on clothes. Not only are they a nightmare for artists to draw, but they also almost never look good. the best OC designs look clear and iconic even at a small scale. 1/2
Advice #6: work steady and practice regularly. If you do art in sudden spurts throughout the year, your growth will be a lot slower and less steady than if you do even a little bit of art once or twice a week.

I answered a question like this a little while back on my main account but this gives me a chance to refine my answer (1/7)
Advice #5: getting eyes on your art is important, but learn to divorce your metrics (likes, follows, etc.) from your sense of success or worthiness. If you invest too much into metrics, your motivation will become dependent on people's praise or how much the algorithms favor you.
