On 29 April 1945, the Dachau concentration camp was liberated by American troops. Dachau is considered to be the largest cemetery of Polish clergy. 1,780 Polish priests were imprisoned in the camp, 868 of whom died. Poles were the largest ethnic group in the camp during the war.
