What exactly is Singapen Adhiradi Padai doing in Tamil Nadu? And where is the protection for women?
Today, at Wimco Nagar railway station, I experienced something that left me furious.
I was standing on the platform, waiting for my train near the ladiesโ coach, when I noticed a
protection, accountability, and the freedom to travel without being harassed.
The next time a woman is verbally abused in public for what she wears, will anyone step in? Or are women simply expected to tolerate this and move on? I wore a decent top !!!
anyone's approval to wear Western clothes. We do not owe strangers an explanation for our clothing.
A railway station is a public space, not a place for men to impose their personal, outdated mindsets on women.
We need more than slogans about women's safety. We need visible
to avoid trouble?
What is the Tamil Nadu government doing? What is the Central government doing? What is the purpose of Singapen Adhiradi Padai if women still have to face this kind of harassment in public spaces?
Women do not need permission to wear jeans. We do not need
Get into the trouble? but why should I have to change what I wear because a man has a problem with women wearing Western clothes? Why is the advice always to adjust ourselves rather than question the people who harass us? How long must we keep compromising our freedom and dignity
expected to adjust, stay silent, and move on just because we don't want to get into trouble?
When I came home and told my parents what happened, my father suggested that I wear a longer top. I understand that he was concerned about my safety, probably he would the same why to
trouble. I noticed two men silently watching the incident. They saw what was happening, yet neither intervened. I understand that people have their own responsibilities and may be afraid of the consequences of getting involved. Even I have responsibilities. But how long are we
someone for harassing me. Isn't that why we have a police force and a government? Then why aren't they there to protect us?
Women like us, and even men, often choose to stay silent when someone insults or humiliates us because we have responsibilities and don't want to get into
Right? I have a family to take care of and responsibilities to fulfil. I don't want to get into a public fight with a man, risk a physical altercation, or get into legal trouble. But why should I have to tolerate insults just because I don't want to fight? It is not my job to hit
travelling to work, going about their lives, and dealing with strangers who think they have the right to police their clothing. Where is the sense of safety? Where is the protection? I did not hit him even though I was fully furious! Because that is not what I should do
and answered him back.I told him, โSeruppu pinchurum!โ because he was literally shaming me with bad bad words. This happened in a crowded public place.
At Wimco Nagar railway station, if we miss a train, we may have to wait an hour for the next one. Women are standing on platform
Seems while pointing to a girl in a churidar as an example of how women supposedly should dress.
Since when did men become the authorities on what women should wear? Who gave them the right to stand in a public place and verbally abuse women over their clothing?
I was furious
a decent, professional top. Nothing revealing. Nothing that gave anyone the right to comment on my body or dictate what I should wear.
He told me that women like me shouldnโt wear such clothes at all. Apparently, he was also scolding another girl for wearing Western clothes, it
man scolding a girl. I didnโt know what had happened, so I simply wondered why he was treating her that way.
Then he walked past me, pointed at me, and started verbally abusing me with the most disgusting words. His problem? The clothes I was wearing.
I was wearing jeans and
