This 50% tariff thing by Trump on India is just a hogwash. It does not stop our march. A coterie within the American DS has realized that they cannot have 2 non white nations grabbing them by their family jewels. They dropped the ball on China and are now paying through their noses. They do not want India to be another headache for them. Tariffs are just a signal to us, warning us to not get too big for our own boots.

They want a nation of 1.5 billion that is poor per capita, but large in aggregate to be a willing vassal who is a part of their great power machinations. At $4 trillion, we are asserting ourselves and that gives US a bit of heartburn. We are China 20 years ago. See where they are today. In US worldview they don't want another $15 trillion + behemoth over the next 20 years. A G2 consensus is emerging. They don't want it to be a G3.

7th fleet had to return in 1971. Sanctions did not work in 1998. Sanctions and tariffs tend to work on single commodity economies with a population of few million. Not countries the size of us or the economies of our size. Modi government is way too nationalistic for their taste. They would like to have the Italian prince or some pliable unmentionable to be reinstated so as to bring the back the pre-2014 status quo.

Next few years are crucial. If by chance these Italian and his basket of deplorables manage to upend Narendra Modi, the purge would be brutal. The festoon bearers of free speech and democracy would ensure every one they don't like are thrown in jail. So that, they may never rise again for decades on end. The scion of GOP has given such indications multiple times. He would be ably applauded by Western media for cleaning up the "RW loonies" who were being the proverbial fly in the ointment for over a decade. Narendra Modi has been always reluctant in unsheathing the scimitar. Perhaps it is now time that he eschews such reluctance.
