For anyone wondering why the sentencing was so heavy — the incident actually happened in 2015, nearly 11 years ago, and this couple were both actually formal members of an organized racist hate gang who would meet at designated times to ride with confederate flags on their pickup trucks while armed with loaded shotguns — specifically looking for black people to confront with threats and slurs; much like the KKK used to.
On this particular day in 2015, they found a child’s birthday party and brandished their guns, looking for a confrontation (that thankfully didn’t end in any deaths). They’d already found others to attack earlier that day and the day before, with this family in particular having many young children present. The couple got out of their vehicle and threatened to kill the group, while also aiming their shotguns.
The family thankfully called the police and charges were pressed. The accused couple (amongst others) decided to take it to trial even though it’s all on video. They were eventually found guilty by a jury on “several counts of aggravated assault, making terroristic threats and violating Georgia's Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.” They’ve also been banished from the county when their sentences are done as punishment.
They were sentenced in 2017, two years after the initial incident. The woman has since been released (in 2020) and should be off of probation this year
