When people delay care or choose between medical care and basic needs because of cost, health systems fail their populations and inequalities deepen.
This #UHCDay talks about unaffordable health costs and why financial protection is important, not only for universal health coverage, but also for long-term social and economic progress.
WHO South-East Asia's Officer-in-Charge Dr Catharina Boehme highlights that unaffordable health costs are pushing families and communities into poverty, worsening health and slowing progress across the Sustainable Development Goals.

Health aid is projected to decline by up to 40% this year compared to just two years ago. This is not a gradual shift — it is a cliff edge.
Lifesaving medicines are sitting in warehouses, health workers are losing jobs, clinics are closing, and millions are missing care.
But in this crisis lies an opportunity.
And the critical first step is political commitment from the highest levels.
The responsibility for financing strong, resilient health systems rests with governments.
The most efficient and equitable source of health financing is the national budget.
My third paper on health systems and type 2 diabetes. This one focuses on a big issue in the news these days, Development Assitance.
