An apology does not erase threats.

The apology reads:

“To the fans, I’m sorry. I lost my composure. Please forgive me.”

Notice who that apology was directed to. It was addressed to the fans, not to NK or his family, the very people who were targeted. It does not acknowledge the threats, the targeting of his family, the attempt to obtain their private information, or the public calls that encouraged others to participate.

This was not a private outburst. These statements were made publicly from an account with more than 164,000 followers. The individual repeatedly stated, “I won’t forgive you,” told NK never to return to Japan, threatened to “start with” his family in Japan, offered to pay for private information about them, and encouraged others to follow along. These are not statements that should ever be dismissed as a joke or brushed aside as a moment of anger. Once threats are broadcast to an audience of that size, the potential harm cannot simply be undone with a brief apology.

We are not reporting because we care whether an account remains online. We are reporting because no one should be able to publicly threaten an individual, target their family, and attempt to obtain their private information without those actions being properly documented, reviewed, and held accountable through the appropriate channels. When conduct may cross legal and platform boundaries, it deserves to be taken seriously.

His apology is not ours to accept. That decision belongs to NK and his family alone.
