Back in 2009, I was on pace to arrive to work on time. I took the LRT from Tayuman station, but when we arrived in Doroteo Jose, a huge wave of alighting people shoved me out of the train, and an even bigger wave of people boarding the train prevented me from going back in.
And then the doors closed, and the train left without me.
It was the boiling-hell phase of my life, where there's something that I really wanted to do as a career, but the pressure from society was too much to ignore. The world wanted my spirit to suffer everyday. I decided to walk home, frowning. I got in my room, crying.
I decided to quit work and was determined to do something at home - without having to see the roads daily. Difficult years of uncertainty and shame. But slowly, more than a decade later, career-wise, I turned out to be okay. Even before all these social media videos happened, I felt like I was finally able to float. I saw proof that it was possible.
Which gives me the confidence to say that maybe other people can build a career at home too. Or to choose their travel time, and to leave the roads to those that really need to use it.
Fundamentally, bad traffic is caused by too much stuff on any given space. Your water pipe will clog if there's too much gunk in it, same with our roads. Too much stuff on a given space. This is where all other ideas stem from. Ideas like taxing the cars, and incentivizing bikes. I like these ideas.
To the people who are very vocal about demanding for better public transportation and better bike lanes, I wish they succeed. They are heroes to me. But at the same time, there's no shame with acting on the things that you can control.
Manila is the densest city in the world.
If you're able to travel by bike, i think that makes sense in NCR.
If you're able to work from home, or transfer to a space that is walking or bike distance from office, I think that makes sense in NCR.
If flexitime is allowed for you, I think that makes sense in NCR.
Keep on poking the authorities, but there are ways to remove yourself from all that gunk. I wish you find one. So that those that really need to use the roads - like doctors, fire trucks, teachers, delivery riders, waiters, food supplies can get there faster. So that your spirit can suffer less.
