As an early career scientist, having a mentor is fundamental to helping you navigate the academic landscape and is useful at international conferences. If it’s your first EPSC, why not make the most of this scheme? 🚀
And if you’re a seasoned pro, sign up as a mentor with us!
Mentoring@EPSC is back by phenomenal demand!
This scheme connects early career researchers (within 7 years of their last degree) with experienced attendees to help them make the most of their EPSC experience.
Sign up as a mentor or mentee now! #EPSCDPS2025
Proud of this incredible variety of early career events we have lined up for this years’ #EPSCDPS2025 … there is something for everyone! Any early careers registered to attend the conference are welcome, no further sign up needed.

Yesterday I got the chance to join a Careers Fair panel for the @CreativeTuiti0n Collective x British Antarctic Survey Virtual Work Experience Week!
For the first time, I spoke candidly about my career in STEM, with words of wisdom to students at the beginning of that journey.

How Evaporative Cooling Can Help Some Communities in Africa Deal with Climate Change.
This is a tool used in Africa that keeps food cold without using any electricity. It’s a pot refrigeration system. The outer pot is filled with wet sand and the inner pot is used to store food.
As the water evaporates, the inner pot cools to temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This pot can even be used to store vaccines. It’s extremely handy in areas where electricity is not as stable and in deserts where food can perish extremely fast.
The systems sell for 40 cents a pot and over 100,000 pots have been sold throughout Africa and it’s been named as one of the best inventions ever.”
The pot-in-pot refrigerator, also known as a Zeer pot or clay pot cooler. This ingenious device is a non-electric, evaporative cooling system.
How it works:
It utilizes two nested earthenware pots, one smaller than the other.
The gap between the pots is filled with wet sand.
Food is placed inside the inner pot.
As water in the sand evaporates from the outer pot, it cools the inner pot through the process of evaporative cooling.
Mohammed Bah Abba, a teacher from northern Nigeria, developed and popularized the Pot-in-Pot Preservation Cooling System in the 1990s. He hailed from a family of pot-makers and saw the need for a practical solution to food spoilage in areas without electricity.
He mass-produced these pots and distributed them to villages, demonstrating their benefits to the local communities.
Benefits:
The Zeer pot, or pot-in-pot cooling system, is not just a method of refrigeration; it is a climate-resilient innovation that helps communities adapt to the harsh realities of climate change in Africa. As temperatures rise and weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, food spoilage due to heat and lack of refrigeration poses a serious threat to food security, especially in rural and off-grid areas. The Zeer pot offers a simple, low-cost, and sustainable solution. It keeps fruits and vegetables cool, extending their shelf life by lowering the temperature inside the inner pot by up to 10 degrees Celsius without using any electricity. This is especially critical in regions where power infrastructure is weak or nonexistent. By preserving food longer, it reduces food waste and the frequency of market trips, which becomes more important during climate-induced disruptions like floods or droughts. Furthermore, because the system relies entirely on natural materials and does not emit greenhouse gases, it contributes to environmental sustainability. It also supports local economies by creating jobs for pot-makers and empowering communities to build solutions from within. In the face of climate change, the Zeer pot stands as an example of how traditional knowledge and appropriate technology can offer powerful, localized answers to global challenges.
