If you all noticed yesterday, i was not really online. I blacked out during a surgery yesterday. I was lucky that the assistant surgeon was a very capable hand to continue and complete the surgery. I recovered early hours of this morning.

I hadn't had sleep for 6 weeks. In Nigeria, one Doctor does the work of 50 Doctors and this is not an exaggeration. The government knows about this but simply DOESN'T CARE. Life means nothing to them. Only money and power retention is important.

Our colleagues are also a very big part of the problem. Shame on our Medical elders generally. Shame on the government.

Without trying to be funny, the Nigerian dream is to game the system to achieve a life free from want, worry, and the pressures of responsibility.

It is about making money without effort and getting things for free without working for them. This is why you see people who travel to places with plenty of opportunity to achieve things with hard work still being caught up in crime and fraud.

One could argue that it is the same for all humans, but in Nigeria, it is cultural. We praise and worship those whom we think achieved this by being "smart" and not those who did it through hard work and sheer effort.

Even when we discover that people are rich, we never think it is from effort; it is likely because they gamed the system. The Nigerian dream is to game the system and do nothing. That is why corruption and fraud are commonplace.

It never used to be like this, and not all Nigerians currently think this way, but a majority now do, thanks to the madness Nollywood has infected the society with, in the name of entertainment. Now, we are too far gone.

The controversy surrounding this video is a function of our poor theology in this part of the world.

People cannot literally understand why someone will still die after being prayed for by a pastor!

We have projected the gospel of convenience for too long; the idea of a god that does everything as we want and not according to his perfect will.

Either we die or live, we are the Lords! A man who dies in the Lord did not loose anything! Death is nothing! Cancer is nothing! Sickness is nothing! Christ is everything!

If this prayer helped him to go through his difficult season with grace and hope, that would have been sufficient!

A designer I spoke to last week said it went two years really quiet and then everything hit all at once.

Signed four enterprise clients, all referrals, all running at the same time. And now he's turning down work.

This is the same week I saw three different threads on X about how designers are finished and AI replaced everyone.

The people with the biggest audiences in this space are often the furthest from the actual market and they're optimizing for engagement, not for clients.

The industry isn't dying. It's just that the people who are busy don't have time to post about it.

They just keep their heads down and work.

This morning, the mechanic fixing our generator made a simple request - "I need petrol to clean it." Fair enough.

I asked someone to get ₦10,000 worth of petrol. He left, came back, handed it over. You'd think that would be the end of it.

But no.

The mechanic looked at me and said, almost casually, "Oga, I'll still need another ₦10,000."

I just paused. Because how do you argue with a system that keeps demanding more before it gives you anything?

Eventually, the generator came back to life. The irony? We'll still buy diesel to actually power it.

That's doing business in Nigeria today - you spend money fixing problems, more money maintaining them, and even more just to keep things running.

In this economy, survival itself is a full-time investment.

Nigeria will be OK.

A kid breaks a TV. His brain just permanently saved that moment. 30 years from now he'll remember it clearer than what he had for lunch yesterday. Your brain has a special system for disasters, and it only needs to fire once.

When something goes badly wrong, three things kick in at once. Your brain has an almond-shaped piece called the amygdala that screams IMPORTANT. The hippocampus (your memory keeper) snaps a photo of where you were. Stress chemicals seal it in.

Scientists call this one-shot learning. You only need to live through it once and your brain treats it like survival data. A 2012 brain-scan study at Duke found that memories formed under threat use a different route in your brain than memories of fun stuff. That route burns the memory in faster and harder, so it sticks.

But the lesson sticking doesn't mean the kid's brain is done. The front of your brain (the prefrontal cortex, sitting just behind your forehead) is the part that runs the simulation before you do something dumb. It's the voice that plays out the next 5 seconds in your head before you act. That voice takes about 25 years to fully come online.

The Cleveland Clinic and a 2013 NIH review both put it at the mid-20s. The wiring connecting the front of the brain to its emotional centers doesn't finish growing until age 21 to 25. The brain keeps trimming unused connections until age 30.

This is why car insurance gets cheaper at 25. It's also why accidents are the leading cause of death for everyone between 10 and 24 in the US, about 40% of all deaths in that age range according to 2023 CDC data.

So yes, this kid is going to remember today. His amygdala made sure of that. But the part of his brain that would have stopped him is still about 15 years away. He's got 15 more years of moments like this before the brake comes online.

Calculating every move and trying to make everything perfect was so dumb. So dumb.

Play status games. Make mistakes. Don't try to get rid of your ego early. Experience all that while it matters.
