I think what I'm least looking forward to from a UK perspective is liberal talking heads congratulating themselves that "at least we're not heading that way over here" when any clear-eyed analysis of the last election result will demonstrate that's *exactly* the path we are on.
Suella Braverman gave the police powers to stop almost any protest. The courts said this was unlawful. The Tories lodged an appeal but then lost the election. Phew! Today the Labour 'grown ups' have announced they're continuing that appeal to preserve this anti democratic law.
This is so sinister. Wes Streeting has accepted £280m from a pharma company to trial an injectable weight-loss drug on the unemployed. This is like something out of a dystopian sci-fi novel. What next??
It is increasingly clear that the UK is a participant in Israel's genocide in Gaza and its atrocities in Lebanon — something the government refuses even to acknowledge, let alone answer questions about.
Grim sign that young soc dems are so calm about the winter fuel cuts due to intergenerational spite, given Reeves is trailing 'pension reform' for October.
There will be no pension left for our generation, because our generation will support abolishing it to own the Tories.
Corbyn: the day after the vote [on the child benefit cap] I spoke to my colleagues who voted with me & asked them what their plan was now they had the whip withdrawn, & they said don’t worry we’ll get it back in 6 months…I said they said that to me five years ago!
Happening shortly:
"The Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner will host a roundtable with MPs and former candidates affected by extremism, harassment and intimidation during the General Election.
The roundtable will discuss how political intimidation and abuse must have no place in our society."
I could not be more ashamed that I spent any of my time helping people who are now content to help starve kids and send weapons to Israel.
Labour is one part tar pit, one part vipers nest. Engaging with it will never be the right strategy for socialists. We need something new.
Along with my independent colleagues, I have written to the MPs who were shamefully suspended for voting to alleviate child poverty.
We need principled voices in Parliament — and we look forward to working with those who believe a kinder society is possible.
All Labour MPs know they could easily lift the cap now, and the reason the leadership isn't has nothing to do with economics but because they want to 1) signal 'seriousness' and 2) get another one over on the 'Labour left'.
They are therefore ALL scum. As bad as the Tories.
Find it really interesting that Keir remains committed in government to the strategy of expelling rather than containing the parliamentary socialist left. Completely different strategy to every other Labour leader, notably including Blair.
I do think he'll regret it!
I knew it was British Muslims who dared vote against Labour MPs, particularly when motivated by Palestine. Even when it was a guy from Pennsylvania, I knew it was them.
In light of 2015-19, now they seek to purge and leave the left to organise outside of the Labour bureaucracy's oversight, judging losing control of the party again to be a greater risk.
May they live to regret it...
Is the Starmer project a decisive break with the historical role of the Labour Party as Ralph Miliband understood it - to contain the left and channel its efforts into non-threatening effects?
When we build strength from below, we can challenge those at the top. Our new movement starts here.
My piece for the @guardian.
