If someone has their hands locked on a single down on the mat, squaring up is not a good option. especially at a high level. It makes it way too easy for them to move their head outside into a high crotch and double (like Levi Haines does) or cut back (like me or guys like Yianni do). Instead, drop your same-side hip and slide off at a 45-degree angle. This puts their arms in a bad spot where they’re forced to unlock and post a hand, and once that happens, you can slide off into a drag go-behind. If they don’t unlock, the Belly Whizzer or Bundle is right there. Too many guys give up easy finishes by squaring up when there’s a way better way to defend. Forcing them into a bad position instead of letting them climb into a stronger finish is just the smarter move.
