To those saying comments like "oh good more money for those who contribute nothing" - check ur facts!
40% of UC claimants are the working poor others are carers, have disabilities or illness, & some who don't have work, want it. A little more compassion & less judgement wouldn't hurt.
We are honoured to be joined by the incredible Junior Smart, Founder of SOS Project at St Giles Trust, who shared with us his personal story that has led him to onto his inspiring work.
I appreciate what I am going to say is going to be unpallatable for some but it needs to be said.
It really doesn't matter how many stop and search charters you have, if fundamentally ethnic groups are still disproportionately (and wrongly) targeted by the process.
Long thread:
The story and treatment of Marieha Hussain is one of the most alarming, ludicrous and unbelievable I’ve ever witnessed. It is a story of eye-wateringly blatant state racism, media complicity in that racism, police manipulation and cultural incompetence. And it is a story that must now end with the resignation of Stephen Parkinson, the current Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). His position is untenable as he has turned the @CPSUK into a free-speech threatening laughing stock.
@andygeorgeni I am so pleased. The very fact she was in court yet all those other figures who use far more racialised speech against people of colour are not shows everything what's wrong with the world and the massive imbalances there are.
These new statistics are shocking, but we’re not surprised. They back up what so many young people have already told us.
And it’s a burden that falls disproportionately on minoritised young people. https://t.co/zCCd8v902c
YEF research found Stop and search reduces crime in the UK by just 5%, In 2022-23, stop and search was used by the police more than 500,000 times in England and Wales. Most searches found nothing, with 14% leading to an arrest and 3% finding a weapon
What does that tell you?
🔍 How effective is stop and search at reducing violent crime?
The YEF Toolkit shows stop and search reduces crime by 13% (global evidence), and by 5% (UK evidence). It also reviews racial disproportionality in the use of stop and search and the impact on Black and minority ethnic children.
A summary on implementing effectively:
➡️Focus on targeted, intelligence-led approaches
➡️ Ensure officers are well-trained and follow best practices like those from @CollegeofPolice
➡️ Build trust by involving the community through scrutiny panels that review cases.

It’s so important we don’t forget the children here.
#Safeguarding, #care, #support & #education will all be key. So many children will be scared by what’s happening, especially Muslim children. We have to make them feel safe in communities.
I can't believe what I am seeing...
Setting fire ro a hotel in order to 'drive immigrants out'!
Don't you dare call it patriotism!
It is more like the attempted murder of families and children!
I hope justice is swift and served.

I too have been shocked by her and others. What I would say to anyone thinking of becoming keyboard warriors over this is to just remember these are human beings and these groups draw in people who are often isolated or don't feel listened to. Hurt people, hurt people
I've seen Sammy Woodhouse in police training sessions, speaking compellingly on the abuse she suffered. Sad to see that she's gone all in with Tommy Robinson's lot.
