North Sikkim: The Eurasian lynx has been photographed for the first time in Sikkim, marking only the second confirmed record in the Eastern Himalayas. The rare wild cat was captured on a camera trap in January 2026 at the Tso Lhamo plateau in Mangan district at an altitude of 17,224 feet

Head of WWF-India’s Himalayas Programme, Rishi Kumar Sharma says, "I think Sikkim is a tremendously biodiversity-rich state and all of us know it's very rich in flora and fauna both. But of course, if you talk about high-elevation areas of Sikkim and across the Himalayas, they are very difficult areas. It's very rugged terrain; the research and logistics of it are all very challenging. So what has been happening in the past almost a decade now is that more and more science and research is happening in these places.
So we get to discover and see more. That's very factual. But even in this case, when we speak about the Eurasian lynx, the local communities there, the Dokpas, they always knew about it..."
