Farewell to Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu
This morning, I joined the clergy drawn from across the country and lay faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki for the requiem Mass and burial of the late Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu, Bishop of the Diocese.
His passing is a profound loss to his family, the Diocese, and the Universal Church, but we are comforted by the testimonies of his life of dedicated service to God and humanity.
In his homily, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji reflected on the inevitability of death and described the late Bishop as a courageous and devoted shepherd whose life was marked by sacrifice, service, and fidelity to his calling. Governor Francis Nwifuru also described him as a monumental loss to Ebonyi State and a pathfinder whose leadership transcended religious boundaries.
The Archbishop’s message further highlighted the moral demands of leadership and the commitment required of those entrusted with governance, both in the Church and public service, to make society work.
The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, representing the Holy Father, underscored the unity of the Universal Church in this moment of grief. I also commend Bishop Ernest Obodo, the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese, for his leadership and for ensuring a hitch-free funeral for the late Bishop.
May God grant Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu eternal rest. -PO
Today, the people of Ebonyi State join the Catholic Church, the Christian community, and all lovers of truth and righteousness in mourning the painful loss of a fearless shepherd of God, the Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, the 3rd Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki.
Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu was not only a spiritual leader, but also a moral compass whose voice resonated beyond the altar into the conscience of society. He stood firmly for truth, justice, discipline, and excellence, even in difficult times. His courage, sincerity, and unwavering commitment to God’s service earned him the respect and admiration of many within and beyond Ebonyi State.
As Governor of Ebonyi State, I deeply acknowledge the enormous contributions of the late Bishop to spiritual revival, moral development, evangelism, and the strengthening of faith-based institutions in our State. He remained a steadfast advocate for justice, accountability, compassion, and responsible leadership.
At a time when society yearns for moral direction and courageous leadership, his passing leaves a painful vacuum that will be difficult to fill. However, we take solace in the eternal promises of God and in the impactful legacy he leaves behind.
The Holy Scriptures remind us in 2 Timothy 4:7:
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
Indeed, Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu fought the good fight of faith. He served God faithfully, defended the weak, strengthened the hopeless, and dedicated his life to the advancement of God’s kingdom and the betterment of humanity.
On behalf of my family, the Government, and the good people of Ebonyi State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, the Christian Association of Nigeria, the entire Catholic faithful, and the bereaved family.
May his gentle and fearless soul rest eternally in the bosom of the Almighty God. Amen.

Today, I had the honour of welcoming to Ebonyi State the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by the Papal Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, ahead of tomorrow’s funeral rites for the 3rd Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Late Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu.
The delegation included the President of the CBCN, Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso; Their Eminences, Peter Cardinal Okpaleke and John Cardinal Onaiyekan; Archbishop Valerian Maduka Okeke; and the Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, Most Rev. Ernest Anaezichukwu Obodo, among other distinguished bishops.
In receiving the revered clerics, I described Late Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu as a bold, courageous, and compassionate shepherd of the Church who spoke truth to power and remained deeply committed to the welfare of his flock and society at large.
Ebonyi State is honoured to host the Catholic faithful and church leaders from across the country as we pay our final respects to a devoted servant of God whose legacy of faith, courage, and service will continue to inspire generations.

Yesterday, I had the honour of convening expanded stakeholders’ meetings of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), across the North, South, and Central zones of Ebonyi State.
These engagements were deliberate and necessary, aimed at strengthening unity within our party and ensuring a transparent, inclusive, and objective process in the nomination of candidates for various elective positions. I am pleased to note that the meetings were fruitful, leading to the emergence of consensus candidates in some areas, while deliberations on others have been responsibly deferred to allow for further consultations.
This approach underscores our collective commitment to internal democracy. We remain resolute in ensuring that the voices of our people are heard and reflected in the choices we make, rather than imposing candidates. Our goal is to present individuals who truly represent the aspirations and interests of the good people of Ebonyi State.
I commend all stakeholders for their sacrifice, maturity, cooperation, and dedication to the unity and progress of our party. Together, we will continue to build a stronger APC and a more prosperous Ebonyi State.
Thank you, and God bless.
