I joined the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana for the opening of its 90th anniversary and Annual General Meeting, under the theme “Science. Impact. Legacy: 90 Years of Pharmaceutical Excellence.”

For many Ghanaians, pharmacists are among the most visible and accessible health professionals, and they have an important role to play as we strengthen healthcare delivery. As initiatives such as Free Primary Healthcare and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) expand care, the competence, integrity, and professional standards of our healthcare workforce remain essential.

Government is also working to increase local pharmaceutical manufacturing to 70% over the next five years. This presents significant opportunities for jobs, research, innovation and economic growth, while reducing our dependence on imported medicines. As we expand production, quality must remain paramount. Medicines made in Ghana must meet rigorous standards and compete confidently beyond our borders.

Ninety years is a remarkable milestone. I congratulate the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and look forward to the profession playing an even greater role in building a stronger, more innovative and increasingly self-reliant healthcare system.

STATEMENT BY THE MINORITY CAUCUS IN PARLIAMENT ON THE ATTEMPTED ARREST OF HON. NANA ADJEI BAFFOUR AWUAH, AT THE HIGH COURT, THE UNLAWFUL DETENTION OF MADAM SALOMEY AWITI BAFOH, AND THE INDEFENSIBLE PRESS RELEASE OF THE ECONOMIC AND ORGANISED CRIME OFFICE

Today, Wednesday, 23rd September 2026, will be remembered as a dark and sad day in the history of our Republic.

Today, a State agency laid hands on a Member of Parliament at the precincts of the High Court, minutes after he had risen in that court to argue for the liberty of a detained citizen. Hours later, that agency issued a press release defending what the nation had watched on video. The release does not explain the conduct. It confirms it.

It is no accident that this happened this week. It happened as the Minority presses for the recall of Parliament to investigate how tonnes of cocaine are leaving Ghana's ports undetected. It happened to a Member at the forefront of that effort.

A State that arrests a nurse at midnight and then lays hands on her lawyer at the door of the High Court is not enforcing the law. It is sending a threatening message.

The Minority Caucus has received that message, and we reject it completely.

THE CRISIS THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT WANT EXAMINED

On 10th September 2026, French authorities seized approximately 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk, concealed in a container of plastic waste that had departed Ghana. It is the latest in a series of narcotics seizures linked to our country: more than 3.3 tonnes of cocaine at Pedu Junction in March 2025; 866 parcels of suspected cocaine at a warehouse within the Tema Harbour enclave in August 2026; and 320 kilogrammes of methamphetamine seized by Australian authorities in June 2026 from a consignment traced to Ghana.

These are not isolated incidents. They raise the gravest questions about the integrity of our ports, the effectiveness of our scanning and intelligence systems, and whether Ghana is being used as a transit point for international narcotics trafficking. They threaten our national security, our trade, and our standing among the nations of the world.

On 18th September 2026, Members of the Minority, exceeding the fifteen per cent threshold required by Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament, formally requested a meeting of Parliament to inquire into these seizures. The Speaker has acknowledged receipt. The Constitution now requires him to summon Parliament within seven days, and Parliament to convene within seven days of that summons.
Hon. Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, is a signatory to that request and one of the leading Minority voices shaping the strategy by which the Government will be held to account for this crisis.
