Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim's declaration that Nigeria has no nuclear weapons is an unnecessary denial of ambition Nigeria has never demonstrated or would ever have been allowed to.

In 2004 when North Korea offered Nigeria ballistic missile technology and was keen to signing an MoU covering defense cooperation, it set off alarm bells in the West, with the U.S and Britain warning Nigeria against buying weapons or accepting deals from North Korea.

Even after Nigeria said any military cooperation would aim to protect Nigeria's national territory and denied any interest in nuclear weapons, the U.S was adamant sternly warned Abuja against pursuing military collaboration with Pyongyang, ultimately forcing Nigeria to walk away from the proposed partnership.

If North Korea’s offer to share missile technology was enough to set off alarm bells in the West and provoke such strong reactions, imagine the response if Nigeria ever seriously considered pursuing nuclear weapons.

No African nation will ever be allowed to develop nuclear weapons capacity. The Treaty of Pelindaba exists for a reason.
