Bishop Francis Văn Thuận was a Catholic shepherd who suffered all the atrocities of Communism. He spent thirteen years of his life as a prisoner in Vietnam. During his imprisonment, he evangelized the guards. He showed them kindness and shared his faith quietly through his conduct and by making small crosses from wood and smuggling them in soap boxes. His guards were moved by his patience and charity. As a result, the authorities frequently rotated them to prevent them from being converted or influenced too deeply by his witness.
