When designing the IBD-RESPONSE protocol, we had to plan for biopsy sampling from up to 40 hospitals - we needed this to be pragmatic and allow for variation in local sample handling. In this series of experiments we modelled different short and medium term storage conditions for samples, reflecting day to day clinical practice in busy endoscopy units. We assessed how variation in anatomical site of colonic sampling influences data. We also assessed different sample preservatives and explored the potential of formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue as material for studying gut microbiota - This potentially unlocks use of routinely collected biopsies in healthcare settings to be used for microbiota research.
