"ENDING AGBEROISM REQUIRES POLITICAL WILL, GOOD GOVERNANCE AND ECONOMIC INCLUSION."
-FUNSO DOHERTY
Hello, Lagosians!
This is the time to take back our state and restore governance that serves the people.
For many Lagosians, the growing concern over agberoism and its influence on the state's political and economic landscape raises serious questions about governance, public order and the future of our communities.
The concern extends beyond Lagos. If Nigerians fail to demand accountability and reclaim public institutions for the people, we risk allowing a system in which political interests, intimidation and informal power structures undermine the rule of law and democratic governance.
Speaking on the issue, Funso Doherty, NDC Lagos Governorship Candidate, described agberoism as a complex problem with economic, social and political dimensions.
According to him, the system operates in a pyramid-like structure and is intertwined with the political machinery of those in power. He also identified social and economic deprivation, including limited access to education and decent employment, as factors that sustain the problem.
Doherty argued that the persistence of agberoism cannot be separated from the political interests that benefit from the existing arrangement. He maintained that meaningful reform requires a government willing to dismantle the structures that enable the practice rather than depend on them for political advantage.
“Nothing is as difficult to solve as what you do not want to solve,” he stated.
For Doherty, the solution begins with building a government that does not depend on agbero networks to facilitate its political operations. Such a government, he argued, would be better positioned to enforce the law, restore public order and address the underlying causes of the problem.
He further stressed that addressing agberoism must go beyond enforcement. Many young people involved in the system need viable alternatives, including access to education, vocational training, skills acquisition and decent employment opportunities that can help them transition into productive roles in society.
The challenge, therefore, is not simply to confront agberoism but to dismantle the conditions that sustain it through accountable leadership, institutional reform, economic empowerment and inclusive development.
Lagos deserves a government that serves the people, protects public spaces, creates opportunities for young people and upholds the rule of law.
Under the banner of Ọ̀NÀ TUNTUN, The New Way for Lagos, Funso Doherty presents this issue as part of the broader conversation about the future of governance in Lagos State.
It is time to reclaim Lagos. It is time for accountability. It is time for a new way.

Lagos 2027: We Will Make Education Nominally Free, Inclusive Of Books And Exam Fees - Doherty
Lagos has been governed by the same administration in different forms for 27 years, yet major gaps remain in areas that affect people’s lives. Our priorities are healthcare, education, opportunities, affordable housing, the environment, basic services, public transportation, jobs, small businesses, and transparency in governance.

Lagos NDC's H.E. Funso Doherty, addressing the persistent challenge of waste management in Lagos, he broke down the complete chain of waste management from collection to transportation, processing, recycling and final disposal.
His message is clear: government must invest in the right infrastructure and build the capacity required to keep Lagos clean, healthy and sustainable.

Well, my own take on this GRV case is-
1) Only the elites and educated people really understand that language has nothing to do with good governance.
2) The random Oshodi/Ikotun market woman or Mr Rasaq in Mechanics Village, Idimu, may not necessarily see it that way. And these are the kinds of voters who make up a significant part of the electorate. They may see a video of him struggling to complete a sentence in Yoruba and interpret it as him being an outsider.
So, for that reason, I think he should have learnt the language, not necessarily because speaking Yoruba makes someone a better governor, but because it would help him connect better with the people and avoid that perception.
But most importantly, proper governance has nothing to do with the language you speak.
