Album Review for BULLDAWG by Kenny Mason
Kenny Mason is a real artist. It takes a lot of work to be an Alt-rapper while being able to create a solid piece of work and using multiple different elements on one album. Sonically this album is all over the place but in a good way. You have some moments that increase the tempo to a high level and some moments that are a tad methodical. You have rock/emo elements and you got that ATL-Trap shit too. Kenny is a solid blend of both sides when it comes to Alt-rap.
Across the album you have some solid instrumentation with your guitar, and heavy metal sounds, but then it’s still some great elements of hip hop and even that trap sound mixed with rage on the track “Black Fit”. The features are a strong clue on the level of complexities involved with the album. JID provides more of a lyrical and storytelling element, which Kenny is capable of and does. Paris Texas has an amazing rock/alt sound which is essentially the basis for the entire project. And then there’s Dominic Fike, who is great with being versatile and that’s how Kenny is going about his tracks.
Production is solid, cohesive, and really fun to listen to. You don’t get many rage projects that can have storytelling elements but that’s the beauty of Kenny Mason. He’s not a one trick pony, but he’s capable of being complex just like his entire album. This is an album with a great mix of sounds, beat switches and lyrics. The album as a whole is a great listen and has tons of replay value. This is one that most should check out even if you’re not sold on the Alternative sound.
