To my friends overseas. Please share this if you can.
Graffiti, such as carvings made with knives and keys into bamboo in Kyoto's tourist spots like Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari, is becoming a serious problem.
Once bamboo is damaged, its cells do not regenerate, leaving permanent scars. This can hinder photosynthesis, increasing the risk of the bamboo wilting or falling over.
Bamboo is a precious natural cultural heritage, symbolizing the charm and scenery of Kyoto.
Some people overseas seem to think "it's okay in my country," but in Japan, this is considered serious property damage.
Please, absolutely do not damage the bamboo.
