10 things I’ve learnt from examiner marking:
1. Word class adds nothing to student analysis and rarely shows a deeper understanding of authorial intent
2. Context should be taught in terms of themes and not just tagged on to the beginning of SOW as students then struggle to apply
@Streettough Less 16 year olds work today then historically. I think it’s to do with a) minimum wage rises and child protection laws meaning minors aren’t as easily exploited and b) school and exams are more full on now with less subjects having coursework options.
@Ye_Olde_Holborn@Midge1415@OWS1892 She was sent home for not following school dress code, which is standard practice in most schools. She wasn’t sent home because it had a Union Jack on it.
Marking again this year and the increase in students trying to use critical theory in their answer is astounding.
Why are students being taught to apply Freud’s ID to Macbeth, Scrooge and Frankenstein?
Do you teach this? If so, why?

@trainteachgrow@MissWalton26@Team_English1 Students need to be able to compare every poem as they don’t know which will be the named poem. Therefore, I would recommend learning 3-4 quotes for 5-6 poems, ensuring that those 3-4 quotes per poem covers all of the poems in terms of comparison
@BFC_1882_ @michaelmahony01@SkyNews Yes & an abortion is taking responsibility. If you don’t wish to be pregnant/raise a child, abortion is a choice. It’s futile discussing this so this will be my last response now as we fundamentally disagree on a woman’s bodily autonomy, what consent is and the purpose of coitus
@BFC_1882_ @michaelmahony01@SkyNews Yes scientifically one is more developed and until a fetus reaches a state when it can independently survive, it’s the host choice if they continue that pregnancy hence why laws are implave that prevent non-medically needed abortions post certain dates
@BFC_1882_ @michaelmahony01@SkyNews Also, just because a person consents to sex and by you definition pregnancy doesn’t mean they can’t remove this consent and therefore have an abortion?
