"Why I'm so into Que Gu

So let me tell you how I first got into Que Gu. Honestly, I'd only heard of the two leads but never actually watched their shows. My knowledge of Hou Minghao was pretty much just from his super popular Cambrian Period, and Aimi? I'd only seen her name around before. I actually stumbled upon Que Gu because I'm a big fan of "Empresses in the Palace," and Tao Xinran's scenes as the Empress Dowager were just so good. I figured I'd give it a shot and opened the first episode, but ended up binge-watching until 4 AM that night. Now I'm trying to get the buzz going every day, hoping it can hit 9 or even 10k. Makes me wonder why I'm so into it. Maybe it's because I haven't seen such a genuine show in ages, and I really don't want this amazing series to get lost in the "bad money drives out good" situation that's happening in the industry right now."

jokes aside tho this scene was so sad to watch. with eyes that can barely see in dim light and a body full of injuries from torture, he insisted on writing something—the beifu army reform proposal along with military strategy manuals

he knew his body had reached its limit. if he were to suddenly die, then even without xiao wuyi, the northern campaign would at least still have a fighting chance. the great ye cannot be without xiao wuyi T~T

@Hongye83 natural and not forced to make the audience happy. It is their loss if they miss out a story because they want more scenes than a solid script. But these kind of posts will only bring hate to him (started) and is disrespectful to the current fl who has nothing to do with it.

But when someone says, ‘I understand everything about you. I want to be fond of you,’ then the reaction you see in that scene is exactly the reaction you’d have in that moment. Like who wouldn’t long for that?

It’s a very…(sigh). It’s like, ‘thank goodness I met you, because you made me realize there’s still such a soft part of my heart.’”

“One thing I can talk about to explain why that scene was so difficult to perform for Xiao Wuyi is how after Xie Jiayu confesses to him, he’s like ‘Wow, I’ve finally heard something back for everything I’ve done,’ he’s overjoyed deep down. But, the most complicated part is that he already knows he’s going to die. So he can’t answer her by saying, ‘I’ll stay by your side,’ or ‘I’ll live on with you.’ Nor can he simply let himself be completely overwhelmed by happiness in that moment. He can’t.

That’s the hardest part of playing Xiao Wuyi there. He receives this confession and inside there’s joy. Even a little shock. Then comes this overwhelming excitement that can’t even be put into words. But all of those emotions have to be held back because he knows he can’t stay with Xie Jiayu until the end. He knows his life may soon be over. So even his happiness is always mixed with bitterness. It’s almost like he’s thinking, ‘Really? You really like me? But I can’t be the one who walks to the end with you. So even though we love each other, I can’t say yes.’ That feeling is there the whole time.

Then she says something like, ‘I don’t want you to become a demon feared by the world. I want you to be the hero in my heart. I want you to be the world’s hero.’

When she says that…everyone noticed that I frowned, if I remember correctly. Although, honestly, I really don’t remember exactly how I acted it anymore. But what I was thinking in that moment was this:

For so many years, I’d made myself strong. I believed I could endure being condemned by the entire world. As long as I accomplished what I set out to do, that was enough. I didn’t need to be a hero. But then, one day, someone says, ‘want you to be a hero.’ And in that instant…what man doesn’t want to truly be that hero? He realizes that the girl standing in front of him actually understands him. How fortunate is that?

That’s roughly what I was trying to express.”

“Then we come to the scene where Xie Jiayu confesses. Actually, this scene was even harder for Xiao Wuyi to perform. Xiao Wuyi really doesn’t have a single line.

I saw a lot of people saying that some of my reactions caught them completely off guard, yet at the same time they felt perfectly natural. I’ve also seen many people asking me to analyze my eye movements, or explain why I acted that way. Honestly, I can’t. I’m serious. Because a lot of the time, when people talk about ‘eye acting,’ or say that a particular moment felt incredibly moving but they can’t explain why…it’s precisely because it was such a genuinely human reaction. It was completely instinctive.

So it’s very difficult for me to explain, ‘Here’s what I deliberately designed,’ or ‘Here’s what I was thinking.’ Or to say, ‘I wanted the audience to feel this specific emotion, so I performed it this way.’ The truth is, when you deliberately design something like that, the audience usually can’t feel it. What really happens is that, when two actors both deeply empathize with their characters, and completely trust each other enough to hand over their emotions during the performance, then all the chemistry that emerges in that moment simply can’t be designed.

I remember that even before we started promoting the drama, I already told everyone how grateful I was to the director and also to Ai Mi. The creative atmosphere on set was very good. Even though Ai Mi is still quite young, it’s precisely because she’s young that every emotion she expresses is so direct, not overthought, and it fits the character in that moment perfectly.

So when Xiao Wuyi is responding to those emotions in that conversation, everything he expresses is instinctive as well. In other words, both of us performed that scene with virtually no conscious design at all. That’s why the sense of immersion for the audience is so strong.”

"I think what made Xiao Wuyi particularly difficult to play in these two scenes was that he has very few lines. Very, very few. Yet his inner world is unbelievably complicated. Most of his thoughts are subtext, things he simply can't say out loud. The only way to express them is through his eyes, or even something as subtle as his breathing, or tiny physical movements that reveal just how complicated his emotions are. That, to me, was the biggest challenge of those scenes.

For example, after his confession, there's that moment where he lowers his head. The way he's looking at her is actually more about focusing on her gaze. It's subconsciously watching her eyes, her left eye, her right eye, watching her breathing. It's almost as though he's using every nerve in his body to sense the girl standing in front of him. He's trying to feel whether her heart is beating. Whether, even for just a moment, her heartbeat skipped a beat, whether if she's beginning to accept these feelings, even just a bit, or if her heart was slightly moved. He's trying to sense those incredibly subtle changes in the atmosphere between them.

So when he catches even the tiniest hint of a response from her…Actually, I don’t think I’d call it secretly feeling pleased, even though everyone keeps describing it that way. I think it's more that, even if everything he's done will never be reciprocated, he believes it's worth it. But in that moment, he is deeply relieved that this girl finally understands him, that she finally realizes everything he's been doing for her.

It's the feeling of...'I never expected my kindness toward you to be noticed. But now that you finally do see it, my heart still feels warm.' That's probably the emotion.

Then, when he notices that she's even slightly moved...At that point in the story, Xiao Wuyi still has no expectation that they'll actually end up together. All he wants is to tell her, 'My heart delights in you,' because he believes he may not have much time left to live. To him, that's okay. He can face death. But before he dies, he wants to tell the girl he's loved for so long, ' love you.' That's all he wants to do.

At no point in that scene is he hoping to be with her. He isn't asking her for anything in return, not an emotional response, not physical affection. He doesn't ask for any of it."
