my mom has has always been right the whole time and i am so stupid and dumb to not have listened to her while making certain life choices that are current affecting my present reality.
I have said this thing countless times, but I’ll say it again for the umpteenth time: if you are still a student in Nigeria, learn a skill. It doesn’t matter whether you are studying Medicine or Microbiology. Learn a skill like your life depends on it. Lmao! Your life actually depends on it.
Life outside school is not a case of “done and dusted.” After you sign out and defend your project, you will regret not learning a skill or starting a small business while you were still in school.
I know this may sound annoying because, in a sane country, your degree should be enough to earn you an honest and decent living. But that is not the reality here. In fact, there is a high chance that you may not even use your certificate after graduation.
Medical doctors in Nigeria are juggling two or three jobs in different hospitals just to make ends meet. Many graduates have become WhatsApp vendors just to stay afloat.
Nigeria has no plan for you. Use that six-month IT period to multitask. Pick a skill, commit to it, and master it. If you are reading this as a student, you don’t know how privileged you are to have a stranger telling you this now.
The hand wey dey meet you for school now na less compared to wetin dey outside if you graduate without a skill. Learn one while it’s still early.
You see those months after graduation? Without a skill, you will find yourself depressed and/or confused. The parents and loved ones who used to send you allowances will stop because you are no longer a student. You’ll wake up every day feeling miserable as the reality that you are now on your own, and nobody is coming to save you, gradually dawns on you.
And that’s not even all. It gets worse after NYSC.
That is when you’ll fully realise that you are now an unemployed graduate. You can no longer say, “I’m a student” or “I’m waiting for service.” The pressure to move out of your parents’ house will start creeping in, especially when living there becomes uncomfortable and you realise you need to go out and make something of yourself.
But without a skill, where will you get the money to start building a life of your own?
Most jobs you’ll find in today’s market offer salaries of ₦100k–₦150k, with a “must have completed NYSC” requirement.
Now, let’s assume you are lucky enough to get a job that pays ₦150k monthly. Let’s do the maths:
Transportation: ₦3,000 daily × 5 days = ₦15,000 weekly. × 4 weeks = ₦60,000 monthly.
Feeding: ₦4,000 daily × 7 days = ₦28,000 weekly. × 4 weeks = ₦112,000 monthly.
Data: ₦5,000 weekly × 4 weeks = ₦20,000 monthly.
Total monthly expenses: ₦192,000.
Mind you, we haven’t even budgeted for rent, let alone electricity bills, groceries, clothes, other utilities, and black tax.
So, tell me, if you are lucky enough to land a job that pays ₦150k monthly, do you think you’ll escape the trenches with the calculations above?
The reality of life outside school is no joke. It is hard. Much harder than you can imagine while you’re still in school.
I’m not saying all these things to scare you. I’m telling you to prepare yourself to fight for your life after graduation.
Let me reiterate: irrespective of the course you are studying, learn a skill or start that small business while you’re still in school.
This is not a piece of advice. It is a warning.
I hope this tweet stays with you. Gracias.
It takes a psychopathic and sociopathic level of dedication to make it out of this system, you cant just want it enough to try when its convenient, if you want to be immense, top 0.0001% you have to push yourself to places that are not human
The sheer intensity of self command, the willingness to become indifferent to distraction, social approval, temporary discomfort and the endless invitations to dilute your own potential, delay gratification, cut costs, focus explicitly on a tiny number of variables for a fixed period of time, to not even entertain the possibility it can be any other way, you have to want it more than anyone else with an obsession that borders on madness, you're adapting whilst they're resting, dude is chilling with his girlfriend cuddling, you are in the trenches scheming more upward mobility, whilst they're complaining your hunting for edges and scanning relentlessly for your next advantage
You have to become extraordinarily selective about what receives access to your mind, your time, your energy and your future. Most people are not defeated by one catastrophic event, they are slowly yet surely disassembled by a thousand small concessions, weak friendships, poor financial decisions, fragmented attention, cheap pleasures, emotional volatility and years spent negotiating with standards they already know they must uphold daily relentlessly
Treat life as an integrated system, protect biology, sharpen judgement, accumulating capital, building competence and refuse to allow temporary emotional states to govern permanent decisions
Even when you're winning you have to be violently honest about where you are slacking and where you are losing momentum, even 30 minutes a day over a year is 182.5 hours, or about 4.5 full time work weeks, you must push harder and you must enjoy the process of knowing you are willing to go further than the next man,I can take more pain than you I can forget my emotions quicker and more repeatedly than you can, my decisions are more objective than yours are, I will outlast you in spirit and action
There is something almost frightening about the individual who can sustain intelligent effort for years without requiring the world to continually reassure him that victory is coming
He is not merely working harder, he is becoming increasingly difficult to interrupt, corrupt, discourage or disorganise repeatedly to turn his spirit, mind and soul into one organised system of task decimation for a broader task of fuliflling the committment he made to himself many nights ago
Finding out that blankets don’t actually make you warm changed my entire worldview. you’re the one generating the heat. the blanket is just trapping it around you. so basically, you’re doing all the work and the blanket is taking credit.
“money deh, money surplus, big love big energy, me and my guys on a convoy, rude boy!.
express yourself my guy, you got only one life, easy, my geezer !”
what a run!
