This is exactly what happens when we elect people drunk on populism and delusions of power.Instead of pushing for trams, light rail, and proper BRT to fix Nairobi’s congestion nightmare, a whole comedian turned MP is busy playing hero for tinted windows and graffiti.
A Brazilian youngster at many other European clubs can wait three years for a registration slot. At Shakhtar Donetsk, he walks straight into the first team. That one fact explains almost everything.
Spain allows three non-EU players per club. France allows four. Ukraine has no registration limits at all, and first division clubs can field up to seven non-EU players simultaneously.
While a talented young Brazilian is sitting in a reserve squad in Madrid waiting for a slot to open, his counterpart at Shakhtar is getting first team minutes, European football, and a transfer fee that grows every season. That in my opinion is the first reason why Shakhtar is attractive to Brazilians.
The second reason was a transfer architecture that was built by one man.
Just stay with me.
When Romanian manager Mircea Lucescu arrived in 2004, he had a simple idea. He wanted Ukrainians in defence with structured instructions, and Brazilians in attack with freedom. He spoke fluent Portuguese, had contacts across Brazilian football, and convinced owner Rinat Akhmetov that this was the way to play attractive, winning football.
In his first summer alone he brought in five Brazilians. Shakhtar won the league that year and barely looked back.
By 2009 the model had announced itself to Europe. Shakhtar fielded five Brazilians in the UEFA Cup final against Werder Bremen and won it. Between 2002 and today, they have signed 47 Brazilian players who have scored over 1,000 combined goals for the club.
For the players, the Unique selling point is easy. They get minutes, a platform, a Brazilian community, and a pathway to bigger clubs. For Shakhtar, they get affordable world class talent that cost less than European talent of same quality with no registration headache. Both parties meet at exactly the right moment.
So Shakhtar is as attractive to Brazilians as Brazilians are attractive to Shakhtar. A symbiosis of sorts.

It is now time to tell my story of how a simple insurance claim turned into a 99 day nightmare.
On December 23 last year, I was involved in an accident near Muthaiga.
A thread.

What a corrupt system we have
Wajeer wey Jiirantahy Jiirow !
Since devolution began in 2013, Wajir County alone has received almost KES.200 Billion in public funds.
Yet, in the Governor’s own words, the county remains unattractive; characterized by poor infrastructure, ungoverned spaces, and a lack of electricity. It is hard to understand how a sitting two term Governor and the current Chairman, Council of Governors can describe his own county this way after presiding over the spending of almost KES.200 Billion that were meant to fix exactly these basic challenges.
Are Reer Wajeer people really being asked to believe that the County could not spare even two shillings out of every a thousand ~ 0.02 % of its total budget to solve the recurring and perennial water shortages for its own people and the Ummah including women, children, the orphans and widows of Wajir, who still have to walk long distances every day in search of life’s most basic needs? SubhanaAllah !
This failure feels even more painful as the Holy Month of Ramadan approaches in two weeks time; families face daily life with no water, no descent sanitation, no electricity, no functional healthcare facilities and with no reliable infrastructure. These are not luxuries. They are the bare minimum required for human life, human dignity and life’s existence. Have some Naxariis for your people. SubhanaAllah !
In the end, the leadership of Wajir County will be judged not by hundreds of media interviews in Nairobi by hopping from one radio station to another, but by the impact you have on the people who entrusted you; Reer Wajeer and results on the Ummah. Reer Wajeer people are not asking for miracles nor life’s niceties.
They are asking for life’s basics; water, descent sanitation, functional healthcare system and electricity. Again Jiirow, have some naxaaris on your people and the Ummah ! SubhanAllah !
The Holy Qur’an in Suratul Yaseen, Ayat 12 (36:12) reminds us that we shall all be resurrected and be called upon to account for our deeds and their consequences. Every injustice, every stolen coin, every life lost will be accounted for truly and fully. Warya Jiir, you certainly know that questions will be asked in Yaumul Qiyamah, and no worldly wealth or power will shield you from divine justice.
Be fair, be just and be true to the Ummah who entrusted you with their fate. SubhanaAllah ! How does it feel to have your County with no descent sanitation system for 60+ years after independence and over 13 years since the advent of devolved funding.
For Heaven’s sake Jiirow, fix the water problem, work on the sanitation system and have a functional healthcare facilities for your people !
Walee, Reer Wajeero waar ba Jiiro iyo Jiir.
Good for PS Muthoni to ban tree-hugging unless you’re certified fit by a doctor. But the best strategy would’ve been banning copycats… because some corrupt doctors will turn those “fitness to hug trees” notes into a business.
My friend @nickwambugu is fighting for his life this festive season.
He was one of those arrested after the documentary in connection to the documentary revealing state violence during the protests.
Now he needs our help for a life saving transplant
