So here’s my personal take on this: Superhero movies or just movies in general used to be well color graded and not goofy at all back in the 2000s. So when studios started making movies a bit goofy or silly at times, it felt like a breath of fresh air (like Thor Ragnarok or the Guardians). But then every movie started looking pale, no color grading and just outright soulless and that’s when we started to appreciate the serious-tone of old films. Kinda reminds me of Scorsese’s comments. If he happens to watch Thor 4, he will probably still stand by his statement.
Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War are prime examples that the audience doesn’t just want goofy storylines. We want the superheros we see on screen to take themselves seriously.
In Thor 4, kids of an entire town gets kidnapped by Gorr and Thor is still making jokes. Does that raise the stakes or downplays them?
A movie, doesn’t matter what genre, should be serious enough in its craft that it drags us into a different world, not just reflect the current shitty reality we live in. We all are suffering in our lives someway or the other, but for those 2 hours, I don’t wanna suffer. I wanna laugh, enjoy, and cry living in some imaginary world, I want that comfort.
Storytelling is still one of the few mediums that brings people under the same roof from all walks of life. It must be taken seriously. Anyway, just my personal opinion, bye now.
