HUGO REMEMBERED - It was on this night 35 years ago that Hurricane Hugo roared through South Carolina changing the landscape and lives forever. Everyone knew it was a horrific night, but no one could imagine how catastrophic the damage would be at first light.
Hugo produced a 20 ft. storm surge in Bulls Bay. It still stands as the highest storm surge ever recorded on the east coast of the United States. Because of Hugo's fast forward motion and perpendicular hit along the coast, a massive storm surge impacted the entire South Carolina coast. Myrtle Beach recorded a 13 ft. storm surge.
The peak wind gusts were right around Hugo's eye. The highest wind gust measured was 138 mph on a ship in Charleston Harbor. Shaw Air Force base in Sumter recorded a 110 mph wind gust. Because Hugo was moving so fast, wind gusts were measured as high as 90 mph in Charlotte. 80% of South Carolinians lost power.
