That was a great rewatch. Summer League teams are thrown off by a 2-3 zone, and then the Lakers gave a lot of high deflection players within that scheme. Kyle, Kaluma, Thiero, Mañon, and Watson are all doing their part interrupting passing lanes while playing defense in space.

Two things can be true. Some Lakers fans truly never liked LeBron James, and nothing he did would have made them like him. That is a fact. LeBron being on your team also turns it into a carousel of drama. I say this as someone who loves LeBron so much that he is my favorite player I’ve ever watched.

Still, I have to be honest. Some of the social engineering he is fond of doing, especially in terms of attention seeking, is not lost on me. There are Kobe Bryant guys who actually respect LeBron for ending the darkest time in LAL history. But they were exhausted by the constant circus around him. We all know LeBron pushed for the Westbrook trade. That happened after the 2020 championship. Pelinka gets a lot of stick for that awful move even though he probably never would have done that trade if LeBron had not asked for it. Pelinka actually wanted to trade for Buddy Hield while keeping Kuzma and KCP.

Contrast that with Luka Dončić, who is pushing for moves but going about them in a more collaborative manner with the front office. There are no subtle messages being pushed to the media to apply pressure.

Again, I am a LeBron guy, but I have to be objective. If LeBron wanted to prove the Lakers fans who dislike him correct, he has done that with this media circus over his next destination. That tweet about LeBron having all the information he needs was a prima donna moment that made me roll my eyes. Completely unnecessary. Going about this as publicly as possible proves them correct about him being conceited.

I love Richard Jefferson, but he is wrong here too. The next five years of Lakers basketball are going to have a lot of winning.
