AN URGENT APPEAL TO THE X COMMUNITY: Help My Sister Marycynthia Win Her Battle Against Lymphoma

​This is the part of life that nothing prepares you for. One day you are healthy, strong, and full of dreams; the next, everything changes because of a few signs on your body. ​My sister, Marycynthia, and I are just two young women trying to find our way in the world. I am a 25 year old graduate, and she is a 23 year old student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Marycynthia has always been the brilliant one, my parents rarely had to pay her school fees because she constantly won scholarships. Even from her hospital bed, she was recently awarded another scholarship sponsored by NNPC. She was supposed to resume this January as a 400-level Law student, but this illness has already taken two years of her life. ​I am reaching out to ask for financial assistance for her treatment. For those who know the medical reality, chemotherapy alone is often not a permanent solution for advanced-stage cancer. She was being managed by the Haematology department at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) before the NARD strike worsened our situation. Now, her best chance at survival is a Bone Marrow Transplant. Despite having anemia, low neutrophil and platelet counts, her kidney and liver functions remain stable. This shows that while her situation is critical, it is not hopeless.
We have been recommended to a hospital in Benin. The cost for the transplant is ₦45,000,000. We don't know for sure how many courses of chemotherapy she is going to receive, scans (PET, CT, ultrasound), concentrated platelets, neutropenia care, transfusions, and private hospital bills, we summed a total of ₦62,000,000 ($44,000).

At first, I felt like my world was crashing. The amount is overwhelming. But thanks to the support of friends and kind-hearted strangers, we have raised ₦18,400,000 ($12,900) so far, which allowed her to begin chemotherapy.
No one can watch their loved one waste away without doing everything possible. I am here again soliciting your support. Balancing her care and fundraising has not been easy for me, I need your help. We still need roughly ₦44,000,000 ($31,780) for the bone marrow transplant.
From one Nigerian to another, one African to another, and one human to another: please help my sister survive Lymphoma. It is treatable if the right care is given.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Damilola Balogun on the 1st of January 2026 😢

Damilola was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and the main applicant for her family on skilled worker visa.

Just five months ago, she welcomed her beautiful baby into the world. What should have been a time of joy soon turned into a painful and tragic journey no family should endure.

It all started when Damilola began complaining of severe migraines. She visited Walsall Manor Hospital, where she was treated and discharged. Three days later, she returned with the same symptoms, but no cause was found and she was sent home again. Two weeks later, the headaches persisted, and this time she was admitted. Doctors administered antibiotics and carried out an MRI scan and a lumbar puncture.

The results revealed water on her brain, and Damilola was urgently referred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, for surgery. The surgery was initially successful, and there was hope.

Tragically, three days later, Damilola went into a coma and was placed on life support. Despite all medical efforts and prayers, it was confirmed that she could not recover. On the morning of 1st January 2026, the life support machine was switched off.

While others were welcoming the first day of a new year in celebration, this family was plunged into unbearable grief.

Damilola leaves behind three children aged 11 years, 10 years, and a 5month old baby, her husband, her mother and grandmother.

Since this ordeal began, her husband has been unable to work, staying by her side throughout hospital admissions and recovery attempts. Their savings have been completely exhausted, and the family is now facing funeral costs and the immense responsibility of raising three children without their mother.

We are humbly asking for your support; no amount is too small. Your donation will help:

•Ease the financial burden on the grieving family

Maybe one last piece of advice on this UK school thing.

When you pay for your master’s, you’re not just paying for classes. Most schools, if not all, have a career services section, though the name might differ depending on your school.

Please go and visit them because they’re always happy to help. They can do a skills assessment for you, review your CV, and even connect you with volunteer or part-time opportunities.

You’ll be surprised how many companies reach out to them directly to ask for student recommendations. I actually got one of my interviews back in school because my career team sent my CV.

Take advantage of those services because they can help you become truly job ready. And if you have interviews, go to them and ask for support.

Schools want their students to be employable after graduation since it also boosts their credibility. So please don’t think your tuition only covers classes. There’s a whole support system waiting for you.
